For anyone who travels by train regularly it is a straightforward proposition. One thing has changed since the card launched, and it matters.

Reward Structure: How You Earn

The card earns Reward Points worth ₹1 each against IRCTC rail bookings — the only full-value redemption channel, and there is no cash-out.

5% on IRCTC train bookings made through SmartBuy. 1% on everything else.

This card was unaffected by HDFC's 15 May 2026 rate change, which moved the Reward Point cards from ₹150 to ₹200 earning blocks. The co-brands were left alone.

The quarterly milestone has expired. HDFC offered a ₹500 voucher for every ₹30,000 of spend in a 90-day window, but the offer applied only to cards issued up to 30 September 2025 and ran only to 31 December 2025. Both dates have passed and nothing has replaced it. Any review or comparison page still listing that milestone as a live benefit is out of date — and it was worth up to ₹2,000 a year, so the difference is material.

Category Restrictions: Where You Won't Earn

  • Where you earn nothing: Earns nothing at all: fuel; EasyEMI and e-wallet loading; rent, property management, maintenance and packers-and-movers; government transactions; education paid through third-party apps such as CRED, Cheq or MobiKwik (paying a college or school directly still earns); and online skill-based gaming. Points are also REVERSED if a retail transaction is later converted to SmartEMI.
  • Point expiry: Reward Points are valid for 24 months from accrual and lapse thereafter — HDFC states 'Unredeemed Reward Points will expire/lapse after 2 years of accumulation'.
  • Redemption fee: ₹99 per redemption.

Is the IRCTC HDFC Bank Credit Card Worth It?

At ₹500 with a ₹1.5 lakh reversal, the card pays for itself on modest rail spending. ₹10,000 a month of train tickets returns ₹500 a month at 5%.

The ₹1 point valuation holds only for IRCTC bookings. There is no statement credit and no cash-out, so if your rail travel stops, the points you have accumulated have no alternative use. That is a real risk on a card you might hold through a change of job or city.

Eight railway lounge visits a year — two a quarter — are a genuine benefit at major stations and rarely mentioned.

The expired milestone leaves the card thinner than its reputation. Judge it on the 5% and the lounge access alone.

Fair Usage caps earning at 25,000 Reward Points per statement cycle.
