MoneyBack is the older of HDFC's two entry cashback cards and the weaker one. At 0.125% base it earns half of MoneyBack+ for the same ₹500 fee, and its only accelerated band — 2X online — is capped at 500 Reward Points a month.

If you are choosing between the two, this is not a close decision.

Reward Structure: How You Earn

MoneyBack earns 2 Reward Points per ₹150 at ₹0.25 a point — 0.125%, with double points on online spends capped at 500 Reward Points a calendar month.

This card was not affected by HDFC's 15 May 2026 rate change. The cashback co-brands and CashPoints cards were named on the unchanged list; only the Reward Point cards moved from ₹150 to ₹200 earning blocks.

The caps that actually bind

Headline rates mean little until you know where they stop. These are the limits on this card:

CapLimit
Rp500 points per calendar month
Cashback Redeem3,000 points per calendar month

The online cap binds at ₹18,750 of online spending a month, after which online reverts to the 0.125% base. Cashback redemption is separately capped at 3,000 CashPoints a cycle, which on this card you are unlikely to approach.

Category Restrictions: Where You Won't Earn

  • Where you earn nothing: Earns nothing at all: fuel; EasyEMI and e-wallet loading; rent, property management, maintenance and packers-and-movers; government transactions; education paid through third-party apps such as CRED, Cheq or MobiKwik (paying a college or school directly still earns); and online skill-based gaming. Points are also REVERSED if a retail transaction is later converted to SmartEMI.
  • Point expiry: Reward Points are valid for 24 months from accrual and lapse thereafter — HDFC states 'Unredeemed Reward Points will expire/lapse after 2 years of accumulation'.
  • Redemption fee: ₹99 per redemption.
  • Rp cap: 500 Reward Points per STATEMENT CYCLE, w.e.f. 15 July 2020 — a whole-card earning cap worth just ₹125 a month at the ₹0.25 rate. It is the binding constraint on this card by a wide margin.
  • Cashback Redeem cap: 3,000 Reward Points per calendar month on statement-credit redemption. Academic here, since the card cannot earn more than 500 a cycle.

Is the HDFC Bank MoneyBack Credit Card Worth It?

MoneyBack+ costs the same and earns twice the base rate with a far better partner list. There is no spending pattern on which this card wins.

Hold it only if you already have it and the ₹500 is being reversed at ₹50,000 of annual spend. Even then, ask HDFC to upgrade you to MoneyBack+ — same fee, materially better card.

At 0.125%, ₹50,000 of monthly spend returns ₹62.50. That is the honest number, and it is why this card reads as a legacy product rather than a live recommendation.

Fair Usage caps earning at 15,000 Reward Points per statement cycle — irrelevant at this rate.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the MoneyBack earn rate? 2 Reward Points per ₹150 at ₹0.25 a point, which is 0.125%. Double on online spends, capped at 500 Reward Points a calendar month.

MoneyBack or MoneyBack+? MoneyBack+, without hesitation. Same ₹500 fee, twice the base rate, and 2.5% at five partner merchants against a capped 0.25% online band here.

Is the online bonus capped? Yes — 500 Reward Points a calendar month, binding at ₹18,750 of online spend.

What does it not earn on? Fuel, rent, wallet loads, government payments, third-party education apps and online gaming earn nothing, and points are reversed if a purchase is converted to SmartEMI.
