811 Dream Different Credit Card Review 2026: 2% Cashback Against an FD, No CIBIL Needed, Fees & FAQs

The 811 Dream Different is a secured credit card — issued against a Kotak fixed deposit, with no income proof and no CIBIL score required. It is the card you get when you cannot get a card, and in September 2026 Kotak gave it a flat 2% cashback programme that makes it genuinely competitive rather than merely available.

The catch is the conditions. There are four of them stacked on top of each other, and if you miss any one, you earn nothing that month.

811 Dream Different Quick Overview

**Card type**Secured cashback card against a fixed deposit
**Best for**Building credit history, or anyone without an income proof or CIBIL score
**Joining fee**₹424 + GST (₹500 including GST), from 1 September 2026. Waived if your credit limit is ₹18,000 or more
**Annual fee****Nil**
**Network**RuPay
**Reward rate**Flat **2%** on eligible card and UPI spends
**Monthly cap**₹500 overall, of which at most ₹200 from UPI, and ₹100 per transaction
**Minimum spend to earn****₹15,000 in the billing cycle** — below that, nothing
**Forex markup****2%** — half what most Kotak cards charge
**Credit limit**Up to 90% of the linked FD

How the FD-backed structure works

Your fixed deposit is the security. Kotak gives you a credit limit of up to 90% of the deposit — a ₹1 lakh FD gets you up to ₹90,000.

The mechanics worth knowing:

  • Minimum FD ₹10,000, maximum ₹20 lakh. You can link multiple FDs to raise your limit, from the Mobile Banking App under Credit Cards → Increase Credit Limit.
  • Your FD keeps earning interest at the applicable rate throughout the deposit tenure. You are not giving up the return.
  • You still have to pay the bill. Dues are not automatically adjusted against the FD. Pay through the Mobile Banking App like any other card.
  • The FD is locked. It cannot be prematurely withdrawn until the card is closed and all dues cleared. The lien is released only after that.
  • Not every FD qualifies. Tax Saver, NRI, Sweep-in, non-withdrawal and Minor FDs cannot be linked, and only Kotak FDs are accepted.

Kotak's own value chart puts the annual benefit at ₹21,000 on a ₹1 lakh FD, but ₹6,500 of that is the FD interest you would have earned anyway and ₹6,000 is "interest free withdrawal" — a way of valuing the float, not cash in hand. The card-specific benefits are the ₹6,000 of cashback, ₹3,500 of fuel surcharge waiver and ₹500 of railway surcharge waiver.

The Cashback Programme: 2%, with four conditions

Effective from the September 2026 billing cycles, the card pays a flat 2% cashback on eligible transactions — online, offline and UPI alike.

Then the conditions start.

1. You must spend ₹15,000 in the billing cycle

This is a threshold, not a tier. Spend ₹14,000 in a cycle and you earn nothing at all — not a reduced rate, nothing. Cross ₹15,000 and cashback is computed transaction by transaction at 2% on everything.

That is the single most important term on this card. If your monthly spend hovers near ₹15,000, the difference between a good month and a bad one is the entire month's earnings.

2. You must have paid last month's minimum amount due — digitally

Cashback for a cycle is awarded only if the minimum amount due on the previous cycle's statement was paid, and paid through a Kotak digital channel — the Mobile Banking App or Net Banking.

Pay by any other route, or carry an overdue balance, and that cycle's cashback is forfeited.

3. Three caps operate at once

CapAmountBinds at
Overall, per billing cycle₹500₹25,000 of eligible spend
UPI, per billing cycle₹200 (**inside** the ₹500, not on top)₹10,000 of UPI spend
Per individual transaction₹100₹5,000 in one transaction

The per-transaction cap is the sneaky one. A single ₹30,000 purchase earns ₹100, not ₹500 — an effective 0.33%. To fill the ₹500 monthly cap you need at least five transactions of ₹5,000 or more, or a spread of smaller ones.

The UPI cap is carved out of the ₹500, not added to it. The maximum you can earn in a month is ₹500, of which at most ₹200 comes from UPI.

4. UPI only counts through the Kotak811 app

The T&C is explicit: "Cashback on UPI transactions is applicable only when transactions are made via the Kotak 811 mobile application. Transactions carried out through third-party UPI applications will not be eligible."

Paying by UPI through PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm or any other app with this card earns nothing. That is a large practical restriction on a card marketed on "Flat 2% Cashback on UPI".

Realistic maximum

₹500 a month, ₹6,000 a year — and only if you spend at least ₹15,000 every cycle, spread it across transactions of the right size, keep UPI inside the Kotak811 app, and pay the minimum due digitally every single month.

On a card with no annual fee, ₹6,000 a year is excellent. Just don't assume you'll hit it.

Claiming your cashback

Nothing is credited automatically. The sequence is:

  1. Cashback is computed after the billing cycle's statement is generated
  2. It is made redeemable by the 15th of the following month
  3. You claim it in the Rewards section of the Kotak811 app
  4. It is credited to your default savings account linked to that app

Cardholders without a Kotak811 savings account receive it directly into their active Kotak Mahindra Bank savings account.

Unredeemed cashback expires in 30 calendar days. It is also forfeited outright on card cancellation, on closure, suspension or freeze of the Kotak811 account, and while any credit card dues are overdue.

This is a card that punishes inattention twice — once through the minimum-due condition and again through the 30-day claim window. Set a monthly reminder.

Where you won't earn

The T&C lists 37 MCCs plus several transaction types. In plain terms, no cashback on:

Wallet loads, fuel, rent payments, ATM withdrawals, EMI transactions, gaming apps and gold purchases — and any transaction that is cancelled, reversed, failed or refunded, fully or partially.

By MCC:

There is also a narration-scanning override, and it is worth reading the actual wording: Kotak says it will scan transaction narrations and may treat transactions whose narration suggests rent, wallet load, fund transfer "and other similar keywords" as ineligible regardless of MCC, that its decision is final, and that the logic is updated continuously without further communication.

So 2% is a ceiling, not a guarantee, even on categories that look eligible.

GST18% on all fees, interest and charges

Three things stand out.

The 2% forex markup is unusually good for an entry card. Most of the Kotak range charges 3.50%; only the Air+ and a handful of premium cards match 2%. On a card with no lounge access and no travel benefits, that markup is quietly its best travel feature — and the card works internationally, subject to enabling the transaction settings.

The cash advance fee is a flat ₹100, not Kotak's usual 2.5% subject to a ₹500 minimum. On any withdrawal above ₹4,000 that is cheaper, and on large ones far cheaper. Interest still runs from the date of withdrawal and cash advances earn no cashback.

The rent fee is 2%, double the Kotak norm — and rent earns no cashback either. Do not pay rent on this card.

Surcharge waivers

Fuel: 1% on transactions between ₹500 and ₹4,000, capped at ₹3,500 in an anniversary year. Note that fuel earns no cashback at all here, and fuel spend above ₹25,000 per cycle attracts a separate 1% fee — so the waiver is the entire fuel benefit and it only goes so far.

Railway: waived at 1.80% of transaction value on online bookings and 2.50% on other bookings, up to ₹500 in an anniversary year.

Getting both waivers is unusual in Kotak's range — most cards get one or neither.

What this card no longer has

The milestone programme is gone. Kotak's MITC describes two historic Dream Different constructs — ₹750 cashback on ₹75,000 of annual spend for older card-number ranges, and Amazon vouchers up to ₹1,000 on ₹72,000 for logo 658 — and then states that with effect from 1 April 2026 the milestone offer is discontinued. Cardholders who had already reached a milestone before that date could still claim it.

There is also no welcome bonus, no renewal bonus, no lounge access and no insurance cover.

Who Should Get the 811 Dream Different Credit Card

Good fit if:

  • You have no CIBIL score or no income proof and need to build credit history
  • You have ₹20,000 or more you are happy to keep in a Kotak FD — it keeps earning interest, and a limit of ₹18,000+ also waives the joining fee
  • You reliably spend ₹15,000 or more a month and will pay the minimum due through the Kotak app every cycle
  • You spend abroad occasionally — 2% forex on a no-annual-fee card is hard to beat
  • You will remember to claim your cashback in the app within 30 days

Look elsewhere if:

  • Your monthly spend is below ₹15,000 — you will earn nothing at all, most months
  • Your spending arrives in a few large transactions — the ₹100 per-transaction cap will eat most of it
  • You use UPI through PhonePe or Google Pay rather than the Kotak811 app
  • You want a card without locking up a deposit, and you can qualify for one on income
  • Rent, fuel or wallet loads are a large share of your spend — all excluded, and two of them surcharged

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a CIBIL score or income proof? No. The card is secured against your fixed deposit, so Kotak does no credit assessment.

What's the minimum fixed deposit? ₹10,000, up to a maximum of ₹20 lakh. Your credit limit is up to 90% of the deposit.

Does my FD still earn interest? Yes, at the applicable FD rate throughout the deposit tenure.

Can I break the FD? Not while the card is open. The FD cannot be prematurely withdrawn until the card is closed and all dues are cleared, and the lien is released only after that.

What's the joining and annual fee? ₹424 + GST (₹500 including GST) as a joining fee from 1 September 2026, waived if your sanctioned credit limit is ₹18,000 or more. There is no annual fee.

How much cashback can I actually earn? ₹500 a month at most — ₹6,000 a year — and only in cycles where you spend at least ₹15,000. At most ₹200 of the ₹500 can come from UPI, and no single transaction earns more than ₹100.

Does UPI on any app earn 2%? No. Only UPI transactions made through the Kotak811 mobile application. Third-party UPI apps earn nothing.

How do I claim my cashback? In the Rewards section of the Kotak811 app, by the 15th of the month after your statement. It expires if not claimed within 30 days.

What happens if I miss a payment? You lose that cycle's cashback. Cashback is awarded only if the previous statement's minimum amount due was paid, through a Kotak digital channel.

Is there a milestone benefit? Not any more. The milestone offer on this card was discontinued with effect from 1 April 2026.

Can I get add-on cards? Yes, free, for family members aged 18 and above. They carry the same benefits as the primary card.
