Kotak NRI Royale Signature Credit Card Review 2026: Double Points on International Spend, Fees & FAQ
The Kotak NRI Royale Signature does something almost no other Kotak card does: it pays more on spending outside India than inside it. Two Reward Points per ₹200 abroad, one per ₹200 at home — and at ₹1 a point, that's 1% against 0.5%.
Every other Kotak card in this range either excludes international transactions from earning entirely or treats them the same as domestic spend. For a non-resident Indian whose spending is largely abroad, that inversion is the card's whole point.
Quick Overview
| **Card type** | NRI travel and lifestyle card |
|---|---|
| **Joining fee** | **Nil** |
| **Annual fee** | ₹1,000 — **no waiver at any spend level** |
| **Add-on card** | ₹599 one-time |
| **Network** | Visa |
| **International rate** | **1%** — 2 Reward Points per ₹200 |
| **Domestic rate** | 0.5% — 1 Reward Point per ₹200 |
| **Point value** | **₹1** catalogue / ₹0.70 cash |
| **Lounge** | 2 domestic per quarter, **no spend gate** |
| **Forex markup** | 3.50% |
The international earn rate
| Spend | Reward Points per ₹200 | Effective rate |
|---|---|---|
| **Outside India** | 2 | **1%** |
| Within India | 1 | **0.5%** |
| Excluded categories | 0 | 0% |
Neither is capped.
Note the accrual is per ₹200, not per ₹100. It's the high point value that does the work here, not the accrual rate: 1 point per ₹200 at ₹1 a point is 0.5%; 2 points per ₹200 is 1%.
But check the maths on international spend before you get excited. The card charges a 3.50% foreign currency markup. At 1% back against a 3.50% markup, international spend on this card is net negative against any zero- or low-markup alternative. The doubled earn rate doesn't come close to covering the cost of the conversion.
The card's real proposition is the "freedom to purchase and pay in INR" — saving the markup on a foreign-issued card and the hassle of currency exchange when you're in India. On that framing the domestic 0.5% is what you're actually earning.
What a point is worth
₹1 on the Kotak Rewards catalogue — stated plainly on the card page: "1 Reward Point = Re 1/-". Redeemable against movie tickets, air tickets, cash and more. The MITC's redemption table corroborates it, putting this card in the ₹1 group alongside the Kotak Infinite.
₹0.70 as cashback, reduced from ₹1 on 1 June 2025. A 30% haircut — take cash and your 1% becomes 0.7%, your 0.5% becomes 0.35%.
Redemption minimums per the MITC: 8,000 Kotak Rewards on the portal, or 2,000 Reward Points through the contact centre.
Add-on cards — unusually liberal
₹599 one-time per add-on card, and the terms are the most generous in Kotak's range:
- Available to your spouse, parents or children aged 18 and above
- Issued "irrespective of location or citizenship status"
For a family split across countries, that last clause is a genuine benefit and no other Kotak card in this dataset offers it in those terms.
Lounge Access
2 complimentary visits every quarter to select domestic lounges in India, with no spend gate.
That distinguishes this card from its mid-tier siblings. The Royale Signature, Zen and Mojo Platinum were all gated on ₹75,000 of previous-quarter spend from June 2025; this one wasn't.
No international lounge access, which is a real gap on a card sold specifically to non-resident Indians who by definition fly internationally.
The June 2025 category changes
| Category | Reward Points earned up to |
|---|---|
| Education and insurance | **₹70,000** per statement cycle each |
| Utility | **₹50,000** per statement cycle |
| Government | **₹40,000** per statement cycle |
| **Wallet load, fuel, rent, online skill-based gaming** | **Nothing at any level** |
Plus EMI conversions and cash advances.
Fees and Charges
| Charge | Amount |
|---|---|
| Joining fee | **Nil** |
| Annual fee | ₹1,000 — **no waiver at any spend level** |
| **Add-on card** | **₹599** one-time |
| Finance charges | 3.75% per month (45% per annum) |
| Interest-free period | Up to 51 days |
| Cash advance fee | 2.5% of the amount, minimum ₹500 |
| **Forex markup** | **3.50%** |
| Dynamic currency conversion | 3.50% |
| Late payment | Nil up to ₹100, rising in slabs to ₹1,300 above ₹50,000 |
| Over-limit | ₹500 |
| Rent payment fee | 1% + GST on MCC 6513 |
| Utility fee | 1% above ₹50,000 per statement cycle |
| Fuel fee | 1% above ₹35,000 per statement cycle |
| **Fuel surcharge waiver** | 1% on **₹500–₹3,000**, capped at ₹3,500 a calendar year |
| Railway surcharge waiver | 1.8% / 2.5%, capped at ₹500 a calendar year |
There is no fee waiver. The MITC gives this card NIL joining and ₹1,000 annual with "NA" in both waiver columns. The ₹1,000 is payable every year regardless of spend — so the card needs roughly ₹1 lakh of international spend or ₹2 lakh of domestic spend a year just to break even on its earn rate.
The fuel surcharge waiver band is the narrowest in Kotak's range — ₹500 to ₹3,000, against ₹500–₹5,000 on the Royale Signature and ₹400–₹7,500 on the premium cards. Fill up for more than ₹3,000 and the waiver doesn't apply to that transaction at all.
Both surcharge waivers apply, capped at ₹3,500 and ₹500 a calendar year respectively.
NRI Royale Shield
The card page mentions a benefit called "NRI Royale Shield" without describing what it covers, and no other document explains it. It may be an insurance package, but nothing about it can be verified here. Ask the bank what it includes before valuing it.
Worked Example
A cardholder spending ₹8 lakh a year, ₹3 lakh of it abroad:
| Source | Spend | Points | Value |
|---|---|---|---|
| International at 2/₹200 | ₹3,00,000 | 3,000 | ₹3,000 |
| Domestic at 1/₹200 | ₹5,00,000 | 2,500 | ₹2,500 |
| 8 domestic lounge visits at ₹1,000 | — | — | ₹8,000 |
| **Total** | **₹8,00,000** | **5,500** | **₹13,500** |
| Annual fee | — | — | **−₹1,000** |
| Forex markup on ₹3 lakh at 3.50% | — | — | **−₹10,500** |
| **Net** | **₹2,000** |
That last line is the one to sit with. The 3.50% markup on international spend costs more than three times what the doubled earn rate pays on it. The card is positive overall only because of the lounge visits.
Who Should Get the Kotak NRI Royale Signature
Good fit if:
- You're an NRI who wants an Indian-issued card to spend in INR while in India, avoiding your foreign card's markup
- You want add-on cards for family in India or abroad — ₹599 one-time, no citizenship or location restriction
- You fly into India often enough to use eight domestic lounge visits a year
- You redeem on the catalogue at ₹1 a point rather than taking cash at ₹0.70
Look elsewhere if:
- You plan to route significant foreign spend through it — the 3.50% markup swamps the 1% earn
- You want international lounge access — this card has none, despite its target market
- You want a fee waiver — there is none at any spend level
- Fuel is a big share of your spend — it earns nothing and the waiver band tops out at ₹3,000
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does international spend earn more? Kotak designed the card for non-resident Indians, so it pays 2 Reward Points per ₹200 abroad against 1 per ₹200 in India. Almost every other Kotak card excludes international spend from earning altogether.
Should I use it for foreign spending? Probably not for the rewards. The 3.50% foreign currency markup costs three and a half times what the 1% earn rate pays. Its value is spending in INR while in India.
What's the fee? Nil joining and ₹1,000 annual, with no waiver at any spend level. Add-on cards are ₹599 one-time each.
What's a point worth? ₹1 on the Kotak Rewards catalogue, ₹0.70 as cashback since 1 June 2025.
Who can I give add-on cards to? Spouse, parents or children aged 18 and above — and Kotak issues them irrespective of location or citizenship status, which is unusual.
How much lounge access do I get? 2 complimentary domestic visits per quarter, with no spend gate. There is no international lounge access.
Which categories earn nothing? Wallet loading, fuel, rent and online skill-based gaming since 1 June 2025. Utility, education, insurance and government earn up to per-cycle caps.
What is the NRI Royale Shield? Kotak lists it as a benefit but doesn't describe it anywhere in the documents available for this review. Ask the bank.
Is there a fuel surcharge waiver? Yes, but the band is narrow — 1% on transactions between ₹500 and ₹3,000 only, capped at ₹3,500 a calendar year.
Fees, rates and benefits verified against the Kotak NRI Royale Signature Credit Card product page, its fees-and-charges, eligibility and FAQ pages, the Kotak domestic lounge list and the Kotak credit-card MITC, as at 23 September 2026. The international earn rate is a geography condition and cannot be expressed as an MCC list.
