Air India SBI Platinum Card Review 2026: 5 RP per ₹100 on Air India, ₹3,750 Milestones & FAQs
Air India SBI Platinum Card costs ₹1,499 and earns 5 Reward Points per ₹100 on Air India bookings, 2 elsewhere, with up to 15,000 bonus points a year and 4 domestic lounge visits. Full maths, the Maharaja Points catch, fees and FAQs.
The Air India SBI Platinum Card is the entry rung of SBI's Air India co-brand: ₹1,499 a year, 5 Reward Points per ₹100 on Air India tickets booked direct and 2 per ₹100 on everything else, with up to 15,000 bonus points a year and four domestic lounge visits.
Two things to weigh. The card has no fee waiver at any spend level — unusual in SBI's range — and its Reward Points have exactly one destination: conversion to Air India Maharaja Points, irreversibly.

Eligibility Criteria
SBI Card publishes no age or income threshold. Approval rests on its own assessment of income, credit history and internal scoring. Indian residency and a valid PAN are required. Add-on cards are free.
An Important Caveat on What the Points Are Worth
Every rupee figure here uses ₹0.25 per Reward Point, and that number carries a health warning.
SBI publishes no rupee value for this currency anywhere in its Air India card pages. It states the accrual rate and names the redemption partner, but never says what a point is worth. ₹0.25 is SBI's standard Reward Point rate across its range, applied here for want of anything better — it is not a measured value of the Maharaja Points channel.
There is reason to think it understates the card: Air India itself sells Maharaja Points at roughly ₹1.50 each. But SBI does not publish the Reward-Point-to-Maharaja-Point conversion ratio, so no better arithmetic is available.
Read the percentages below as a conservative floor.
How Redemption Works — and Its Restrictions
The points' only stated destination is conversion to Air India Maharaja Points:
- Minimum 5,000 points, and in multiples of 5,000
- Takes 7 working days
- Irreversible — converted points cannot come back
- Redeeming Maharaja Points for yourself requires at least one flight accrual activity on the Maharaja Club account
There is no statement-credit channel and no catalogue on this card. If you do not fly Air India, the points have nowhere useful to go — which makes this a genuinely narrow currency.
Note also that Air India rewards credit within 60 days of the transaction posting, which is slow by Indian standards.
Reward Structure
| Spend | Points | Effective rate at ₹0.25 |
|---|---|---|
| **Air India tickets booked direct** | 5 RP per ₹100 | **1.25%** |
| Everything else | 2 RP per ₹100 | **0.5%** |
| Fuel, cash advances | Nil | **0%** |
Neither rate carries a published cap.
"Booked direct" is a real condition. The 5X rate applies only to Air India tickets bought through its website, app, booking offices or call centres. A ticket bought on MakeMyTrip, Yatra or through a corporate travel desk earns the 0.5% base rate instead. This is the single most common way cardholders lose the accelerated rate.
Welcome Benefit and Milestones
Welcome: 5,000 Reward Points — ₹1,250 at ₹0.25 — credited within 15 days of the annual fee payment posting, plus complimentary membership of the Air India Maharaja Club. That covers most of the ₹1,499 fee in year one.
Milestones:
| Annual spend | Bonus points | Value at ₹0.25 |
|---|---|---|
| ₹2,00,000 | 5,000 | ₹1,250 |
| ₹3,00,000 | 10,000 | ₹2,500 |
| **Both** | **15,000** | **₹3,750** |
SBI states the ceiling as "up to 15,000 bonus Reward Points annually" — ₹3,750, or two and a half times the annual fee, but only if ₹3 lakh of annual spend is reached.
The thresholds are set sensibly close together: ₹2 lakh and ₹3 lakh, or roughly ₹17,000 and ₹25,000 a month. Both are within reach for someone using the card as their primary.
Milestones are measured from the account creation date, not the calendar year — SBI states this explicitly.
Lounge Access
4 complimentary domestic airport lounge visits a year. There is no international lounge access and no Priority Pass membership on this card.
Four visits at a ₹1,499 fee is modest but reasonable for the tier.
Worked Example
Illustrative, at ₹25,000 a month — ₹3 lakh a year, which clears both milestones:
| Category | Monthly spend | Rate | Points | Value |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Air India tickets, booked direct | ₹4,000 | 1.25% | 200 | ₹50 |
| Everything else | ₹19,000 | 0.5% | 380 | ₹95 |
| Fuel | ₹2,000 | 0% | 0 | ₹0 |
| **Monthly total** | **₹25,000** | **580** | **₹145 — 0.58%** |
Annual tally:
| Reward Points earned | ₹1,740 |
|---|---|
| Milestones at ₹2 lakh and ₹3 lakh | ₹3,750 |
| Welcome points (year one) | ₹1,250 |
| **Year-one total** | **₹6,740** |
| **Steady state** | **₹5,490** |
| Annual fee | **₹1,499** (never waived) |
| **Net, steady state** | **₹3,991 — 1.33% of spend** |
Plus 4 domestic lounge visits, not counted — and remember the ₹0.25 valuation is a conservative floor.
Notice how much of the return is milestones: ₹3,750 of the ₹5,490, against ₹1,740 from the earn rate. This card is a milestone card with an airline badge, and if you cannot reach ₹3 lakh of annual spend, most of its value is out of reach.
Where You Won't Earn
| Excluded | Note |
|---|---|
| **Fuel** | MCC 5172, 5541, 5542, 5983 |
| **Cash advances** | 2.5% fee, minimum ₹500, interest from day one |
The fuel surcharge waiver is the whole fuel benefit: 1% reversed on transactions between ₹500 and ₹3,000, capped at ₹100 per statement cycle.
SBI's range-wide transaction fees apply: ₹199 per rent payment, 1% on wallet loads above ₹1,000, 1% on utility payments once the cycle total passes ₹50,000, and 1% on education payments through third-party apps.
Fees and Charges
| Charge | Amount |
|---|---|
| Joining fee | ₹1,499 + GST |
| Renewal fee | ₹1,499 + GST — **no spend-based reversal at any level** |
| Add-on card fee | Nil |
| Finance charge | 3.75% per month — **45% per annum** |
| Interest-free period | 20 to 50 days; none if any part of last month's bill is unpaid |
| Forex markup | **3.5%** |
| Cash advance fee | 2.5%, minimum ₹500 |
| Fuel surcharge waiver | 1% on ₹500–₹3,000, max ₹100 per cycle |
| Late payment | ₹100 to ₹1,300 by balance |
| Overlimit | 2.5%, minimum ₹600 |
| Reward redemption fee | ₹99 on physical products, statement credit and physically-sent vouchers |
| GST | 18% on all of the above |
The absence of any fee waiver is the card's clearest weakness. SimplySAVE costs a third as much and reverses at ₹1 lakh; SBI Card PULSE costs the same ₹1,499 and reverses at ₹2 lakh. This card never does.
Platinum vs Air India SBI Signature
| **Air India SBI Platinum** | Air India SBI Signature | |
|---|---|---|
| Annual fee | ₹1,499 | ₹4,999 |
| Air India rate | 5 RP per ₹100 (1.25%) | **10 RP per ₹100 (2.5%)** |
| Base rate | 2 RP per ₹100 (0.5%) | **4 RP per ₹100 (1%)** |
| Welcome | 5,000 RP (₹1,250) | 20,000 RP (₹5,000) |
| Milestone ceiling | 15,000 RP (₹3,750) | **100,000 RP (₹25,000)** |
| Milestone thresholds | ₹2 lakh, ₹3 lakh | ₹5 lakh, ₹10 lakh, ₹20 lakh |
| Domestic lounge | 4 a year | 8 a year |
| Fee waiver | None | None |
Break-even on the ₹3,500 fee difference is about ₹7 lakh of annual spend on the base rate alone. Below that the Platinum's lower fee and much closer milestone thresholds make it the better card — ₹2 lakh and ₹3 lakh are achievable where ₹5 lakh and ₹10 lakh are not.
Is the Air India SBI Platinum Card Worth It?
Yes, if you spend ₹2–3 lakh a year and fly Air India occasionally. The two milestones return ₹3,750 against a ₹1,499 fee, and the Maharaja Club membership is a real benefit if you would join anyway.
Yes, as an entry point to the Maharaja Club for someone building Air India status.
No, if you do not fly Air India. Points convert to Maharaja Points and nothing else — irreversibly, in blocks of 5,000, and only redeemable once you have a flight accrual on the account. A one-exit currency is a real risk.
No, if your annual spend is under ₹2 lakh. With no fee waiver and no milestone reached, the ₹1,499 is pure cost against a 0.5% base rate. SimplySAVE at ₹499 pays 1.67% on four everyday categories and reverses its fee at ₹1 lakh.
Note the valuation uncertainty. At ₹0.25 a point this card looks modest; if Maharaja Points are worth closer to Air India's ₹1.50 sale price, it looks better. SBI does not publish the conversion ratio needed to settle it.
