The BPCL SBI Card OCTANE pays 7.25% value back at BPCL petrol pumps, which is the highest published fuel rate on any Indian credit card. It costs ₹1,499 a year, and like its cheaper sibling the whole proposition rests on a cap: the accelerated rate stops at ₹10,000 of BPCL fuel spend a statement cycle. Within that ceiling, nothing else comes close.

Eligibility Criteria

SBI Card publishes no age or income threshold for the OCTANE. Approval is at the bank's discretion based on income, credit history and internal scoring. Indian residency and a PAN are required. Add-on cards are free and can be issued to parents, a spouse, children or siblings aged 18 and above.

The 7.25% Explained Properly

SBI's own wording is precise, and the arithmetic matters:

6.25% + 1% Fuel surcharge waiver on every BPCL transaction up to Rs. 4,000 (exclusive of GST and other Charges)

25X Reward Points = 6.25%. Twenty-five times the 1-point base gives 25 Reward Points per ₹100. At 4 points to the rupee that is ₹6.25 per ₹100.

Plus a 1% fuel surcharge waiver. The 1% surcharge that every fuel transaction in India attracts is reversed on BPCL transactions up to ₹4,000, with no minimum threshold, on a POS swipe.

These are different mechanisms with different limits. The points half is capped per statement cycle; the waiver works per transaction.

The Cap: 2,500 Points a Statement Cycle

The accelerated fuel rate stops at 2,500 Reward Points per statement cycle. At 25 points per ₹100, that is ₹10,000 of BPCL fuel spend — the same ceiling as the standard BPCL SBI Card, because the cap rose in exactly the same proportion as the rate.

Past ₹10,000, fuel earns nothing at all. The surcharge waiver continues.

₹20,0002,500 (capped)₹625₹200₹825 — **4.13%**

At ₹10,000 a month sustained, the fuel benefit alone is ₹8,700 a year against a ₹1,499 fee.

OCTANE vs the Standard BPCL SBI Card

The ₹1,000 difference in fee buys a materially different card, not a trim level.

At ₹10,000 of monthly fuel, the OCTANE returns ₹300 a month more on fuel alone — ₹3,600 a year — against ₹1,000 of extra fee. If your fuel spend is anywhere near the cap, the OCTANE is the better card by a wide margin.

Where the Accelerated Rate Applies

Only at BPCL. Fill up at any other brand and you earn nothing. SBI identifies BPCL outlets from a merchant-ID list updated, in its own words, "on a best effort basis" — a newly opened pump may not register at once.

Bharat Gas earns 25X too, but only when booked through the Bharat Gas website or app, and it is capped at 500 Reward Points a statement cycle — just ₹2,000 of spend, roughly one cylinder a month. Book through any other channel and the accelerated rate does not apply.

Mobile wallet uploads and non-BPCL fuel earn nothing. SBI names both.

The Second Rate: 2.5% on Everyday Categories

CategoryMCCRate
Dining5812, 5813, 58142.5%
Departmental stores53112.5%
Grocery and supermarkets54112.5%
Movies78322.5%
Everything else—0.25%

Capped at 7,500 Reward Points a month across all four combined, binding at ₹75,000 of such spend. At 2.5%, this band is competitive with mainstream reward cards in its own right — the OCTANE is a better everyday card than its fuel branding suggests.

As always, the category follows the merchant's MCC, not what the shop sells.

Welcome and Milestone Benefits

Welcome: 6,000 bonus Reward Points, worth ₹1,500. Credited only after the joining fee has been paid and realised. That is the fee back in year one.

Milestone: ₹2,000 of e-gift vouchers at ₹3,00,000 of annual spend. You choose from Aditya Birla Fashion, Yatra or Hush Puppies. The Aditya Birla voucher is redeemable at Louis Philippe, Van Heusen, Allen Solly and the group's other brand stores. At ₹3 lakh a year — ₹25,000 a month — this is within reach for anyone using the card as a primary.

Reward Points on this card redeem against fuel at BPCL outlets as well as through the Shop & Smile catalogue, which makes them unusually liquid for a co-brand currency.

Other Benefits

4 complimentary domestic lounge visits a calendar year, on the Visa programme, capped at 1 per quarter. There is no international lounge access.

₹1 lakh of fraud liability cover, complimentary. SBI publishes no further terms on its product pages.

Worked Example

Illustrative, at ₹45,000 a month:

CategoryMonthly spendPointsValue

**Monthly value back****₹1,285 — 2.86%**

Annualised: ₹15,420 in points and waiver, plus the ₹2,000 milestone voucher (₹45,000 × 12 = ₹5.4 lakh clears ₹3 lakh comfortably) — ₹17,420 against a ₹1,499 fee that is itself reversed at ₹2 lakh.

Is the BPCL SBI Card OCTANE Worth It?

Yes, if you buy fuel at BPCL and spend ₹8,000–₹10,000 a month on it. At the cap the fuel benefit alone is ₹8,700 a year against a ₹1,499 fee — a return no other fuel card in India matches. Add a 2.5% everyday band, a ₹2,000 milestone and four lounge visits, and the card earns its keep several times over.

Probably still yes if your fuel spend is lower but your grocery and dining spend is high. At 2.5% on four everyday categories with a ₹75,000 monthly ceiling, the OCTANE competes with general-purpose reward cards on its own.

No, if you are loyal to a different fuel brand — the entire proposition evaporates — or if your fuel spend is far above ₹10,000 a month, where the cap steadily erodes the effective rate. At ₹25,000 a month of fuel the card returns 3.5%, and a flat-rate cashback card may serve better.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the annual fee of the BPCL SBI Card OCTANE? ₹1,499 plus GST, on joining and renewal. The renewal fee is reversed on ₹2,00,000 of annual spend in the previous year.

How is the 7.25% calculated? 6.25% in Reward Points (25X, at 4 points to the rupee) plus a separate 1% fuel surcharge waiver. Both apply at BPCL pumps on transactions up to ₹4,000.

What is the monthly fuel cap? 2,500 Reward Points per statement cycle, reached at ₹10,000 of BPCL fuel spend. Beyond that fuel earns no points, though the 1% surcharge waiver continues on each transaction.

Does Bharat Gas earn the accelerated rate? Yes — 25 Reward Points per ₹100 — but only when booked through the Bharat Gas website or app, and capped at 500 Reward Points a statement cycle, which is about ₹2,000 of spend.

How many lounge visits does the OCTANE give? Four complimentary domestic airport lounge visits a calendar year, on the Visa programme, with a maximum of one per quarter. There is no international lounge access.

Is the OCTANE worth ₹1,000 more than the standard BPCL SBI Card? If your monthly BPCL fuel spend is ₹8,000 or more, yes — the fuel benefit alone is ₹3,600 a year better. Below roughly ₹3,000 a month of fuel, the standard card's lower fee wins unless you value the lounge access and milestone voucher.

Can I redeem Reward Points for fuel? Yes. Points redeem against fuel purchases at BPCL outlets as well as through the Shop & Smile catalogue, at ₹0.25 a point. A ₹99 redemption fee applies to physical products, statement credit and physically-sent vouchers.
