Google Pay Flex SBI Card Review 2026: The Milestone Multiplier, Earning on Fuel & FAQs
Google Pay Flex SBI Card costs ₹499 and earns Stars worth ₹1 each — but per ₹500 spent, not per ₹100. A monthly milestone multiplier can take the rate to 1.6%, and it is one of only two cards here that earns on fuel. Full maths, fees and FAQs.
The Google Pay Flex SBI Card is a ₹499 RuPay card that earns Stars, redeemed as instant cashback on UPI payments in the Google Pay app. It is unusual in three ways: the earn rate is set by a milestone multiplier that changes with your monthly spend, Stars accrue cumulatively across the billing cycle rather than per transaction, and — alone among SBI cards — it earns on fuel.
It is also easy to misread. "1 Star = Re 1" sounds generous until you notice that Stars accrue per ₹500 spent, not per ₹100.

Eligibility Criteria
SBI Card publishes no age or income threshold. Approval rests on its own assessment. Indian residency and a valid PAN are required. Add-on cards are free.
The Denominator Is ₹500 — Start Here
SBI states "1 star = Re 1", which is true and sounds generous. But the accrual rate is per ₹500 spent, not per ₹100:
| Rate | Stars | Effective rate |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Star per ₹500 | **0.2%** | |
| 2 Stars per ₹500 | **0.4%** | |
| 4 Stars per ₹500 | **0.8%** | |
| 8 Stars per ₹500 | **1.6%** |
It is easy to read the Re. 1 valuation as generous and miss the denominator. A card paying 1 point per ₹100 at ₹0.25 a point returns the same 0.25% — so "₹1 a Star" on its own tells you nothing.
Stars accrue cumulatively — which helps
SBI's wording is "for every ₹500 spent cumulatively on eligible transactions". Stars accrue on the running total across the billing cycle, not per transaction.
That is better than it sounds. On a per-transaction card, ten ₹400 purchases would earn nothing at all — each falls short of the ₹500 block. Here they contribute ₹4,000 to the running total and earn 8 Stars. Small, frequent purchases are not rounded away, which suits a UPI-linked card.
The Milestone Multiplier Is the Card
This is the mechanic that determines everything, and it works differently from any other milestone in SBI's range. It is not a fixed benefit at a spend threshold — it changes your earn rate for the whole billing cycle, and the step depends on the rate you are already at.
SBI's own table:
| Your current rate | Spend > ₹15,000 in a cycle | Spend > ₹30,000 in a cycle |
|---|---|---|
| **1X** (1 Star per ₹500) | → **2X** (0.4%) | → **4X** (0.8%) |
| **2X** (2 Stars per ₹500) | → **4X** (0.8%) | → **8X** (1.6%) |
In practice almost every active cardholder starts at 2X, not 1X. SBI's wording is "Earn 2 Stars on every ₹500 spent cumulatively — on spending ₹100 or more in the previous cycle". So ₹100 of spend last month unlocks the doubled rate this month. The 1X rate applies only after a completely dormant cycle.
Which means the realistic ladder for anyone using the card is:
- Under ₹15,000 a month: 0.4%
- ₹15,000–₹30,000 a month: 0.8%
- Over ₹30,000 a month: 1.6%
₹30,000 a month is the number to plan around. It doubles your rate for the whole cycle, retroactively — so spending ₹29,000 and spending ₹31,000 are very different outcomes.
One caveat on durability
SBI's milestone terms say "Star earnings in milestone category will be offered by Google Pay directly" and describe the whole scheme as "an introductory offer and is subject to change". The multiplier is therefore less durable than a contractual card feature — it is Google Pay's promotion, not SBI's obligation.
It Earns on Fuel — And That Is Unique
SBI states: "Earn Stars on all eligible spends (including fuel)."
Every other SBI card excludes fuel outright — MCCs 5172, 5541, 5542 and 5983 are cut from the rewards programme across the range. This card is one of only two in the whole dataset that earns on it.
The trade-off: no fuel surcharge waiver is published, so the 1% surcharge that every Indian fuel transaction attracts is not reversed. At 1.6% earning against a 1% unreversed surcharge you are 0.6% ahead; at 0.4% you are 0.6% behind. On this card, fuel is only worth putting on it once you are at the 4X or 8X multiplier.
Redemption Is Unusually Direct
Stars are redeemed as instant cashback while making a UPI payment with this card on the Google Pay app — they discount the payment at the moment it is made, rather than accruing to a statement or a catalogue. They can also go towards exclusive vouchers in the app, at the same Re. 1 rate.
No redemption minimum and no stated expiry. Stars are a Google Pay currency rather than an SBI Reward Point, so SBI's usual 24-month forfeiture clock does not obviously apply — though equally, nothing guarantees they last forever.
Welcome Benefit
Three parts:
- A welcome gift worth ₹500 on the Google Pay app
- 500 Stars (₹500) on payment of the joining fee
- 2 Stars for every ₹500 spent cumulatively in the first two billing cycles
The first two are worth ₹1,000 against a ₹499 fee. The third is a rate boost whose value depends entirely on how much you spend, so it is not priced here.
Worked Example
Illustrative, at ₹32,000 a month — enough to trigger the 8X multiplier every cycle:
| Monthly spend | ₹32,000 |
|---|---|
| Rate (2X holder above ₹30,000) | **8 Stars per ₹500 — 1.6%** |
| Stars per month | 512 |
| **Monthly value** | **₹512** |
Annual tally:
| Stars earned (₹3.84 lakh of spend at 1.6%) | ₹6,144 |
|---|---|
| Welcome gift + Stars (year one) | ₹1,000 |
| **Year-one total** | **₹7,144** |
| **Steady state** | **₹6,144** |
| Annual fee | **₹0** (reversed at ₹1 lakh) |
| **Effective return** | **1.6% of spend** |
Now the same card at ₹12,000 a month, below both multiplier thresholds:
| Rate | 2 Stars per ₹500 — **0.4%** |
|---|---|
| Annual spend | ₹1,44,000 |
| Stars earned | **₹576** |
| Annual fee | **₹0** (₹1 lakh cleared) |
₹6,144 against ₹576 — a tenfold difference driven entirely by crossing ₹30,000 a month. No other card in SBI's range has a cliff this sharp.
Where You Won't Earn
| Excluded | Note |
|---|---|
| **Cash advances** | 2.5% fee, minimum ₹500, interest from day one |
That is the only exclusion SBI names. No excluded merchant category is published for this card, and the captured terms contain no MCC schedule — so the base rate should be read as a ceiling on categories SBI has not addressed, not a guarantee. Check your first statements.
SBI's range-wide transaction fees still apply: ₹199 per rent payment, 1% on wallet loads above ₹1,000, 1% on utility payments once the cycle total passes ₹50,000, and 1% on education payments through third-party apps.
Fees and Charges

Google Pay Flex vs Other ₹499 SBI Cards
| **Google Pay Flex** | SimplySAVE | PhonePe PURPLE | Paytm SBI Card | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fee reversal | ₹1,00,000 | ₹1,00,000 | ₹1,00,000 | **None** |
| Base rate | 0.4% (active) | 0.17% | **1%** (capped) | **1%** (uncapped) |
| Best rate | **1.6%** above ₹30k/month | 1.67% on 4 categories | 3% on PhonePe bills | 3% on Paytm Travel |
| Fuel | **Earns** | Excluded | Excluded | Excluded |
| Caps | None | 5,000 pts/month | ₹2,750/month ceiling | None |
| Redemption | **Instant on UPI** | Catalogue, ₹99 fee | Cash or vouchers | Points |
Google Pay Flex only makes sense at the top of its ladder. At 1.6% it is competitive with anything at this price; at 0.4% it is beaten by both fintech rivals, which pay 1% on everything with no threshold to clear.
Is the Google Pay Flex SBI Card Worth It?
Yes, if you spend between ₹30,000 and roughly ₹94,000 a month on it. At 1.6%, with instant UPI redemption and a fee reversed at ₹1 lakh, it is a genuinely good card — but the 1,500-Star cycle ceiling binds at about ₹94,000 of spend, so the rate falls away above that.
Yes, if you want a UPI-linked credit card. Being RuPay, it links to UPI, and Stars discount those UPI payments directly — a tighter loop than any points catalogue.
Yes, if you spend on fuel and can hold the 8X rate. Being the only SBI card that earns on fuel is a real differentiator, though the missing surcharge waiver cancels most of it below 4X.
No, if your monthly spend is under ₹15,000. At 0.4% the card is beaten by the PhonePe PURPLE and Paytm SBI Card, which both pay 1% on everything without a threshold.
Treat the multiplier as provisional. Google Pay describes it as an introductory offer subject to change, and it is Google Pay that funds it, not SBI.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the annual fee of the Google Pay Flex SBI Card? ₹499 plus GST, on joining and renewal. The renewal fee is reversed at ₹1,00,000 of annual spend.
What is a Star worth? ₹1 — SBI states "1 star = Re 1". But Stars accrue per ₹500 spent, not per ₹100, so 1 Star per ₹500 is only 0.2%.
How does the milestone multiplier work? It changes your earn rate for the whole billing cycle. A cardholder at 2X moves to 4X above ₹15,000 of monthly spend and 8X above ₹30,000 — 0.8% and 1.6% respectively. A cardholder at 1X moves to 2X and 4X.
How do I get the 2X rate? Spend ₹100 or more in the previous billing cycle. In practice that means almost every active cardholder sits at 2X rather than 1X.
Does the card earn on fuel? Yes — SBI states "Earn Stars on all eligible spends (including fuel)". It is one of only two cards in this dataset that does. But no fuel surcharge waiver is published, so the 1% surcharge is not reversed.
How do I redeem Stars? As instant cashback while making a UPI payment with the card on the Google Pay app, or against exclusive vouchers in the app. There is no redemption minimum and no stated expiry.
Do Stars accrue per transaction? No — cumulatively across the billing cycle. Ten ₹400 purchases contribute ₹4,000 to the running total and earn Stars, where a per-transaction card would award nothing.
Is the multiplier permanent? Not guaranteed. SBI's terms say the milestone Stars are "offered by Google Pay directly" and describe the scheme as "an introductory offer and is subject to change".
