The Karur Vysya Bank - SBI Platinum Credit Card is a ₹2,999 premium card co-issued with Karur Vysya Bank. It pays 2.5% on dining, departmental stores and international spends, gives two complimentary domestic lounge visits every quarter, and returns ₹6,000 of e-gift vouchers at ₹5 lakh of annual spend. There is no fee waiver, so the milestones are how the card pays for itself.

Eligibility Criteria

The card is distributed through Karur Vysya Bank. SBI Card publishes no age or income threshold; approval rests on the bank's assessment. Indian residency and a valid PAN are required. Add-on cards are free.

An identical card, the South Indian Bank SBI Platinum Credit Card, is distributed through South Indian Bank. The two product pages are the same line for line apart from the bank name — same fee, same rates, same caps, same milestones, same lounge entitlement. Choose on banking relationship, not economics.

Reward Structure

Reward Points are worth ₹0.25 each — 4 points redeem against ₹1 of the outstanding bill. Every rate below is stated after that conversion.

SpendPointsEffective rate
Dining10 RP per ₹100 (5X)**2.5%**
Departmental stores10 RP per ₹100 (5X)**2.5%**
**International spends**10 RP per ₹100 (5X)**2.5%**
Everything else2 RP per ₹100**0.5%**
FuelNil**0%**

The accelerated band is capped at 7,500 Reward Points a month, shared across all three legs, which binds at ₹75,000 of such spend in a month.

SBI states plainly what happens past the cap: "After reaching the capping limit, 2 Reward Points for every Rs. 100 spent will continue to accrue." The rate falls back to the base rate, not to zero — better than the silent treatment most cards give.

The international leg is not as good as it looks

2.5% on international spends sounds strong until you set it against the card's 3.5% forex markup. Spend ₹100 abroad, pay ₹3.50 in markup, earn ₹2.50 in points: you are still 1% down. The accelerated rate softens foreign spending; it does not make this a good card for it. If overseas spend is a real part of your life, SBI Card ELITE's 1.99% markup is worth more than this card's 5X.

Category depends on MCC

The rate follows the merchant's MCC, assigned by Visa, not by what the shop sells. A restaurant billed under a hotel's code will not earn the dining rate. Note also that SBI's page for this card names "Departmental Stores" without separately naming grocery — in practice the two are grouped together across SBI's range, but a pure supermarket transaction is worth checking on your first statement.

Welcome and Milestone Benefits

Welcome: a ₹3,000 e-gift voucher, chosen from Yatra, Hush Puppies, Bata, Westside, Aditya Birla Fashion, Shoppers Stop and others. The link arrives at your registered email and mobile within 21 days of the annual fee being realised — not on approval — and is claimed with your registered mobile number and an OTP.

Milestones: two ₹3,000 e-gift vouchers, one at ₹4,00,000 of annual spend and a second at ₹5,00,000, from the same brand list.

Annual spendMilestone value
₹4,00,000₹3,000
₹5,00,000₹3,000
**Both cleared****₹6,000**

The two rungs sit unusually close together — just ₹1 lakh apart — and pay the same amount. If your annual spend lands at ₹4.2 lakh, the marginal ₹80,000 needed to reach ₹5 lakh is worth ₹3,000, an effective 3.75% on that stretch. Worth planning around.

There is no spend-based fee reversal on this card. The ₹2,999 is payable every year regardless. Cleared in full, the milestones return double it.

Lounge Access

2 complimentary domestic airport lounge visits every quarter — 8 a year. That is a strong domestic entitlement at this fee.

Internationally, the card includes complimentary Priority Pass membership worth US$99 with access to 1,000+ lounges worldwide. But every visit costs US$27 plus taxes, the membership is valid for 2 years only, and only primary cardholders are eligible. The $99 membership fee is saved; no visit is free. At roughly ₹2,300 a visit, treat the international lounge entitlement as zero when comparing cards.

Worked Example

Illustrative, at ₹42,000 a month — ₹5.04 lakh a year, which clears both milestones:

CategoryMonthly spendPointsValue
Dining₹9,000900₹225
Departmental stores and grocery₹13,0001,300₹325
Everything else₹20,000400₹100
**Monthly total****₹42,000****2,600****₹650 — 1.55%**

Annual tally:

Reward Points₹7,800
Milestone vouchers (₹4L + ₹5L)₹6,000
Welcome voucher (year one only)₹3,000
**Year-one total****₹16,800**
**Steady-state total****₹13,800**
Annual fee**₹2,999** (never waived)
**Net, steady state****₹10,801 — 2.14% of spend**

At ₹5 lakh the card works well. At ₹2 lakh of annual spend the same table returns roughly ₹3,700 against the ₹2,999 fee — thin, and the milestones go unclaimed.

Where You Won't Earn

ExcludedNote
**Fuel**MCC 5172, 5541, 5542, 5983 — excluded across SBI's range
**Cash advances**2.5% fee, minimum ₹500, interest from day one

The fuel surcharge waiver is the whole fuel benefit: 1% reversed on transactions between ₹500 and ₹4,000, capped at ₹250 per statement cycle.

SBI's range-wide transaction fees apply: ₹199 per rent payment, 1% on wallet loads above ₹1,000, 1% on utility payments once the cycle total passes ₹50,000, and 1% on education payments through third-party apps.

Is the Karur Vysya Bank SBI Platinum Worth It?

Yes, if you will spend ₹4–5 lakh a year. The two milestone vouchers alone return ₹6,000 against a ₹2,999 fee, and 2.5% on dining and departmental stores with a ₹75,000 monthly ceiling is a competitive everyday rate. Eight domestic lounge visits a year is generous at this price.

Yes, if you fly domestically. Two lounge visits a quarter is more than most cards at ₹2,999 offer.

No, if your annual spend is under ₹2.5 lakh. With no fee waiver and milestones you cannot reach, the ₹2,999 is not recovered. The ₹499 SimplySAVE covers more everyday categories for a sixth of the price.

No, as an international card. The 5X on foreign spend does not cover the 3.5% markup, and Priority Pass costs US$27 a visit. SBI Card ELITE at ₹4,999 charges 1.99% forex and includes six genuinely free international lounge visits.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the annual fee of the Karur Vysya Bank - SBI Platinum Credit Card? ₹2,999 plus GST, on joining and renewal. There is no spend-based fee reversal.

What is the reward rate? 5X Reward Points on dining, departmental stores and international spends. Against this card's base of 2 points per ₹100, that is 10 points per ₹100 — 2.5% at 4 points to the rupee. Everything else earns 0.5%.

Is the accelerated rate capped? Yes — 7,500 Reward Points a month across the three categories combined, reached at ₹75,000 of such spend. Past the cap the base rate of 2 points per ₹100 continues.

Is the card good for international spending? Not really. The 2.5% earn rate is outweighed by the 3.5% forex markup, leaving you about 1% down on every foreign transaction.

How many lounge visits are complimentary? Two domestic visits every quarter — eight a year. The Priority Pass membership is complimentary but each visit costs US$27 plus taxes, is valid for 2 years, and covers only the primary cardholder.

What are the milestone benefits? A ₹3,000 e-gift voucher at ₹4 lakh of annual spend and a second ₹3,000 voucher at ₹5 lakh, from Yatra, Hush Puppies, Bata, Aditya Birla Fashion, Westside or Shoppers Stop.

How does it compare with the South Indian Bank SBI Platinum Credit Card? They are the same product distributed through two different banks. Fee, rates, caps, milestones, lounge access and fuel waiver are identical.
