Shaurya Select SBI Card Review 2026: 2.5% on CSD, ₹10 Lakh Cover, Lounge Access, Fees & FAQs
Shaurya Select SBI Card costs ₹1,499 and gives defence personnel 2.5% on CSD, dining, movies, grocery and departmental stores, ₹10 lakh accident cover, 4 lounge visits and ₹9,000 of annual milestone vouchers. Full maths, fees and FAQs.
The Shaurya Select SBI Card is the upgraded defence-services card: ₹1,499 a year, 2.5% on CSD and four everyday categories, ₹10 lakh of personal accident cover, four domestic lounge visits and up to ₹9,000 a year in milestone vouchers. Against the ₹250 standard Shaurya it is not a trim level — it doubles both reward rates, multiplies the accident cover fivefold and adds a milestone programme worth six times the fee.

Eligibility Criteria
Offered to serving and retired personnel of the Indian Army, Navy, Air Force and paramilitary services. SBI Card publishes no age or income threshold; approval rests on its own assessment. Indian residency and a valid PAN are required. Add-on cards are free and may be issued to parents, a spouse, children or siblings aged 18 and above.
This Is a RuPay Card, and Two Benefits Depend on That
The ₹10 lakh personal accident cover is offered by RuPay, not by SBI Card. RuPay's own terms condition the cover on the card having been used within a qualifying period before the incident, so an inactive card may not be covered. Confirm the current usage requirement rather than assuming the cover is unconditional.
The fuel surcharge reversal does not apply to UPI transactions. RuPay credit cards are the ones that can be linked to UPI, which makes this carve-out easy to trip over. Scan a UPI QR at the pump and you lose the 1% reversal; swipe or tap the card and you keep it.
Reward Structure
Reward Points are worth ₹0.25 each — 4 points redeem against ₹1 of the outstanding bill. Every rate below is stated after that conversion.
| Spend | Points | Effective rate |
|---|---|---|
| **CSD canteens** | 10 RP per ₹100 | **2.5%** |
| Dining | 10 RP per ₹100 | **2.5%** |
| Movies | 10 RP per ₹100 | **2.5%** |
| Departmental stores | 10 RP per ₹100 | **2.5%** |
| Grocery and supermarkets | 10 RP per ₹100 | **2.5%** |
| Everything else | 2 RP per ₹100 | **0.5%** |
| Fuel | Nil | **0%** |
No caps are published on either rate on SBI's product pages — notable, because most SBI cards cap their accelerated bands at 5,000 to 10,000 points a month. An uncapped 2.5% band is genuinely competitive.
One point of clarification worth making, since SBI's own page is terse here. SBI writes the accelerated band simply as "5X Reward Points" without stating the absolute figure. Read against this card's own base of 2 points per ₹100, 5X gives 10 points per ₹100 — 2.5%, and that is the reading used throughout this article and corroborated by independent reviews. On the standard Shaurya, whose base is 1 point per ₹100, the same "5X" gives 5 points and 1.25%.
A word on CSD. The Canteen Stores Department is the card's most relevant category and the least documented. SBI names "CSD" without publishing a merchant category code, and CSD outlets do not code uniformly across acquirers. Check your first CSD statement entry to confirm the accelerated rate applied.
For all other categories, the rate follows the merchant's MCC as assigned by the card network, not by what the shop sells.
Renewal Benefit and Milestones
This is where the Select pulls away from the standard card.
Renewal: 1,500 Reward Points — ₹375 — on payment of the renewal fee. A quarter of the fee back, automatically, every year.
Quarterly milestone: a ₹500 Pizza Hut e-voucher on ₹50,000 of spend in a calendar quarter. Cleared all four quarters, that is ₹2,000 a year — more than the fee after the waiver. ₹50,000 a quarter is about ₹16,700 a month.
Annual milestone: a ₹7,000 e-gift voucher from Yatra or Pantaloons on ₹5,00,000 of annual spend.
Together the two milestones are worth ₹9,000 a year at ₹5 lakh of spend — six times the annual fee. Add the ₹375 renewal bonus and the card returns ₹9,375 in fixed benefits alone, before a single Reward Point.
Note the thresholds do not line up. The fee is waived at ₹1.5 lakh, the quarterly voucher needs ₹2 lakh a year to clear all four times, and the big voucher needs ₹5 lakh. A cardholder optimising only for the fee waiver stops at ₹1.5 lakh and collects three of the four Pizza Hut vouchers at best.
Insurance
₹10 lakh of personal accident and permanent disability cover, provided by RuPay — five times the standard Shaurya's ₹2 lakh. It covers death and permanent disability arising from an accident, subject to RuPay's network and usage conditions.
Lounge Access
4 complimentary domestic airport lounge visits every year, capped at 1 per quarter, on the RuPay lounge programme. There is no international lounge access.
Because the entitlement is one per quarter rather than four at will, unused quarters do not roll forward. If you fly rarely but in clusters, you will not use all four.
Worked Example
Illustrative, at ₹42,000 a month — ₹5.04 lakh a year, which clears every threshold:
| Category | Monthly spend | Points | Value |
|---|---|---|---|
| CSD canteen | ₹12,000 | 1,200 | ₹300 |
| Grocery and departmental | ₹12,000 | 1,200 | ₹300 |
| Dining and movies | ₹5,000 | 500 | ₹125 |
| Everything else | ₹13,000 | 260 | ₹65 |
| **Monthly total** | **₹42,000** | **3,160** | **₹790 — 1.88%** |
Annual tally:
| Reward Points | ₹9,480 |
|---|---|
| Pizza Hut vouchers (4 × ₹500) | ₹2,000 |
| Yatra / Pantaloons voucher at ₹5 lakh | ₹7,000 |
| Renewal bonus (1,500 RP) | ₹375 |
| **Total return** | **₹18,855** |
| Annual fee | **₹0** (waived at ₹1.5 lakh) |
That is an effective return of 3.7% on ₹5.04 lakh of spend, on a card with no fee. Few cards at any price do better for a spender with this profile.
Where You Won't Earn
| Excluded | Note |
|---|---|
| **Fuel** | MCC 5172, 5541, 5542, 5983 — excluded across SBI's range |
| **Cash advances** | 2.5% fee, minimum ₹500, interest from day one |
The fuel surcharge waiver is the whole fuel benefit: 1% reversed on transactions between ₹500 and ₹4,000, capped at ₹250 per statement cycle, and not applicable on UPI transactions.
SBI's range-wide transaction fees apply: ₹199 per rent payment, 1% on wallet loads above ₹1,000, 1% on utility payments once the cycle total passes ₹50,000, and 1% on education payments through third-party apps.

Shaurya Select vs Shaurya
| Shaurya | **Shaurya Select** | |
|---|---|---|
| Annual fee | ₹250 | ₹1,499 |
| Fee waiver | ₹50,000 | ₹1,50,000 |
| Base rate | 0.25% | **0.5%** |
| Accelerated rate | 1.25% | **2.5%** |
| Welcome | 1,000 RP (₹250) | None |
| Renewal bonus | None | **1,500 RP (₹375)** |
| Accident cover | ₹2 lakh | **₹10 lakh** |
| Lounge | None | **4 domestic a year** |
| Milestones | None | **₹9,000 a year at ₹5 lakh** |
The crossover is around ₹1.5 lakh to ₹2 lakh of annual spend. Below that, the standard Shaurya's ₹250 fee and ₹50,000 waiver are hard to beat. Above it, the Select's doubled rates and milestone programme make the higher fee irrelevant — it is waived anyway.
Is the Shaurya Select SBI Card Worth It?
Yes, if you spend ₹1.5 lakh or more a year on the card. At that level the fee vanishes and you keep an uncapped 2.5% on five categories, ₹10 lakh of accident cover, four lounge visits and ₹2,000 of Pizza Hut vouchers. Push to ₹5 lakh and you add ₹7,000 more.
Yes, if CSD is a meaningful part of your spending. 2.5% uncapped on the services' own retail network is the best rate available on that spend.
No, if your card spend is under ₹1 lakh a year. The ₹1,499 fee will not be waived, the quarterly vouchers will go unclaimed, and the ₹250 standard Shaurya does the same job for a sixth of the price.
No, if you are not defence-affiliated — the card is not offered outside the services.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the annual fee of the Shaurya Select SBI Card? ₹1,499 plus GST, on joining and renewal. The renewal fee is waived if annual spend in the previous year reached ₹1,50,000.
What is the reward rate on CSD spends? 5X Reward Points. Against this card's base of 2 points per ₹100, that is 10 points per ₹100 — 2.5% at 4 points to the rupee. SBI publishes no cap on the rate.
How much personal accident cover is included? ₹10 lakh, provided by RuPay rather than by SBI Card, and applicable only on RuPay network cards. RuPay conditions the cover on recent card usage, so check the current requirement.
What are the milestone benefits? A ₹500 Pizza Hut e-voucher for every calendar quarter in which you spend ₹50,000 or more, and a ₹7,000 Yatra or Pantaloons e-gift voucher on ₹5,00,000 of annual spend. Together, ₹9,000 a year at full usage.
Is there a welcome benefit? No welcome gift is published for the Select, unlike the standard Shaurya's 1,000 Reward Points. The Select instead pays 1,500 Reward Points — ₹375 — on every renewal.
How many lounge visits do I get? Four complimentary domestic airport lounge visits a year, with a maximum of one per quarter, on the RuPay programme. Unused quarters do not carry forward. There is no international lounge access.
Does the fuel surcharge waiver apply to UPI payments? No. SBI's terms exclude UPI transactions from the surcharge reversal on its RuPay credit cards. Swipe or tap the card at the pump to keep the 1% waiver.
