The SimplySAVE SBI Card is SBI's entry-level everyday card: ₹499 a year, 1.67% on dining, movies, grocery and departmental stores, with the renewal fee reversed at ₹1 lakh of annual spend. It is one of the most widely held cards in India, and for good reason — but there are two details in the reward maths that most reviews skate past, and both work against you.

Eligibility Criteria

SBI Card publishes no age or income threshold. Approval rests on the bank's own assessment of income, credit history and internal scoring. Indian residency and a valid PAN are required. Add-on cards are free and may be issued to parents, a spouse, children or siblings aged 18 and above.

A secured variant, SimplySAVE SBI Card Advantage, is issued against a fixed deposit for applicants who cannot qualify on income alone. Its terms are not published on the main product page.

Reward Structure

Reward Points are worth ₹0.25 each — 4 points redeem against ₹1 of your outstanding bill. Every percentage below is stated after that conversion, because "10X" means nothing until you know what a point is worth.

Unusually for an Indian card, SBI publishes the merchant category codes outright in the SimplySAVE T&C booklet, so there is no guesswork about what qualifies:

CategoryMCCPointsEffective rate
Departmental stores531110 RP per ₹150**1.67%**
Grocery and supermarkets541110 RP per ₹150**1.67%**
Dining5812, 5813, 581410 RP per ₹150**1.67%**
Movies783210 RP per ₹150**1.67%**
Everything else—1 RP per ₹150**0.17%**
Fuel5172, 5541, 5542, 5983Nil**0%**

Note how narrow the published codes are. Departmental stores means MCC 5311 specifically — a large-format retailer coded differently will not qualify. Dining covers eating places, drinking places and fast food, but not a restaurant billed under a hotel's code. The rate follows the merchant's MCC as assigned by the card network, never what the shop actually sells.

Catch One: The Denominator Is ₹150, Not ₹100

SBI's wording is precise and easy to misread:

Earn 10X Reward Points per Rs. 150 spent on dining, movies, departmental stores and grocery On all other spends, earn 1 Reward Point per Rs. 150 spent

Per ₹150. Run the arithmetic at 4 points to the rupee:

Per ₹150Per ₹100 equivalentEffective rate
Accelerated categories10 RP6.67 RP**1.67%**
Everything else1 RP0.67 RP**0.17%**

That 0.17% base rate is among the lowest on any Indian card, and it is entirely a function of the denominator. A card paying 1 point per ₹100 would return 0.25% on identical spend.

There is a quieter cost too. Accrual rounds down to complete ₹150 blocks on every transaction. Spend ₹280 at a supermarket and you earn on ₹150, not ₹280 — ₹130 is simply lost. Over a year of ordinary grocery runs, that rounding is a real deduction of a few percent from the headline rate. Larger, less frequent transactions earn more efficiently on this card than small ones.

Catch Two: The 5,000-Point Monthly Cap, on the Calendar Month

The accelerated band is capped at 5,000 Reward Points per calendar month, shared across all four categories combined. At 10 points per ₹150 that binds at ₹75,000 of accelerated spend in a month.

The good news: SBI states what happens past it. "1 Reward Point for every Rs.150 spent, as per the card policy, will continue to accrue." So the rate falls back to the base rate, not to zero.

The detail that catches people out: SBI meters this on the calendar month, not your statement cycle. Most Indian issuers use the billing cycle. A ₹40,000 grocery run on the 28th and another on the 2nd fall in different pools even though they land on the same bill — which is helpful if you are near the cap, and confusing if you are not expecting it.

At ₹75,000 a month of accelerated spend, most households will never approach the cap. It matters mainly for large one-off purchases at qualifying merchants.

Welcome Benefit

2,000 bonus Reward Points, worth ₹500, on spending ₹2,000 or more within the first 60 days.

That is the easiest welcome condition in SBI's range, and ₹500 covers the ₹499 fee exactly — year one is free. The 60-day clock runs from card receipt.

Fee Reversal

The renewal fee is reversed on ₹1,00,000 of annual spend — about ₹8,400 a month across all categories, including the ones that earn only 0.17%. SBI calls it a "Spend Based Reversal" rather than a waiver; the effect is identical. The ₹499 joining fee is not reversible.

There is no milestone programme and no renewal bonus on this card. The fee reversal is the only anniversary-year benefit.

Worked Example

Illustrative, at ₹25,000 a month:

CategoryMonthly spendBlocks of ₹150PointsValue
Grocery and departmental₹9,00060600₹150
Dining₹3,00020200₹50
Movies₹1,000660₹15
Everything else₹12,0008080₹20
**Monthly total****₹25,000****940****₹235 — 0.94%**

Annualised: ₹2,820 in Reward Points on ₹3 lakh of spend, plus ₹500 of welcome points in year one — against a ₹499 fee reversed at ₹1 lakh, cleared three times over.

The blended rate lands under 1% because more than half the spend sits in the 0.17% bucket. The card is only as good as the share of your spending that falls in its four categories.

Where You Won't Earn

ExcludedNote
**Fuel**MCC 5172, 5541, 5542, 5983
**Cash advances, balance transfers, Flexipay**Plus 2.5% fee, minimum ₹500, on cash

One honest caveat: SBI lists the fuel codes outright and then refers readers to the Shop & Smile Rewards Program terms for "other exclusions" by URL. Those additional exclusions are not reproduced on the product page, so treat the base rate as a ceiling on categories SBI has not explicitly addressed, not a guarantee.

The fuel surcharge waiver is the entire fuel benefit: 1% reversed on transactions between ₹500 and ₹3,000, capped at ₹100 per statement cycle.

SBI's range-wide transaction fees apply: ₹199 per rent payment, 1% on wallet loads above ₹1,000, 1% on utility payments once the cycle total passes ₹50,000, and 1% on education payments through third-party apps (payments made directly to an institution attract nothing).

Fees and Charges

Late payment₹100 to ₹1,300 by balance
Overlimit2.5%, minimum ₹600
Reward redemption fee₹99 on physical products, statement credit and physically-sent vouchers

The ₹99 redemption fee deserves attention on a card this size. Redeeming 940 points — ₹235 — for a physical product leaves you ₹136. Redeem in larger blocks, or against the card outstanding where the fee still applies but is diluted across a bigger redemption.

SimplySAVE vs SimplyCLICK vs CASHBACK

SBI's three entry and mid-tier cards split cleanly by where you spend.

Is the SimplySAVE SBI Card Worth It?

Yes, as a first card or a household grocery card. ₹499 reversed at ₹1 lakh, ₹500 of welcome points, 1.67% on four categories most families spend on every week — the card costs nothing for most holders and returns something real.

Yes, if you shop offline. SBI publishes the qualifying MCCs, which removes the usual ambiguity about whether a purchase will earn.

No, as a primary card. A 0.17% base rate means everything outside four categories earns almost nothing, and the ₹150 rounding takes a further bite. Anyone putting ₹40,000+ a month across varied categories should look elsewhere.

No, if you shop online. The CASHBACK SBI Card at ₹999 pays 5% on unrestricted online spend and credits in rupees rather than points at a quarter-rupee each.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the annual fee of the SimplySAVE SBI Card? ₹499 plus GST, on joining and renewal. The renewal fee is reversed if annual spend in the previous year reached ₹1,00,000. The joining fee is not reversible.

What is the reward rate? 10 Reward Points per ₹150 on dining, movies, departmental stores and grocery — 1.67% at 4 points to the rupee — and 1 Reward Point per ₹150 on everything else, which is 0.17%.

Why is the base rate only 0.17%? Because points accrue per ₹150, not per ₹100. One point per ₹150 is 0.67 points per ₹100, which is 0.17% after the 4-points-to-a-rupee conversion. Accrual also rounds down to complete ₹150 blocks on every transaction.

Is the accelerated rate capped? Yes — 5,000 Reward Points per calendar month across all four categories combined, binding at ₹75,000 of such spend. Past the cap the base rate of 1 point per ₹150 continues. Note SBI meters this on the calendar month, not your statement cycle.

Which merchants qualify for 10X? Those coded 5311 (departmental stores), 5411 (grocery and supermarkets), 5812, 5813 and 5814 (dining), and 7832 (movies). SBI publishes these codes in its T&C booklet. The merchant's MCC decides, not what the shop sells.

How do I get the welcome bonus? Spend ₹2,000 or more within the first 60 days of receiving the card. You get 2,000 bonus Reward Points, worth ₹500 — enough to cover the joining fee.

Does the card offer lounge access? No. SimplySAVE has no lounge programme, no insurance and no milestone benefits.

Does fuel earn Reward Points? No. Fuel is excluded across SBI's range. The 1% fuel surcharge waiver on transactions between ₹500 and ₹3,000, capped at ₹100 a statement cycle, is the entire fuel benefit.
