Tata Card Review 2026: 3% on Grocery, 1% Base, ₹499 Fee Waived at ₹1 Lakh & FAQs
Tata Card costs up to ₹499 and pays up to 5% at Tata outlets, 3% on grocery and departmental stores and 1% on everything else, in Empower Points worth ₹1 each. Uncapped, with the fee waived at ₹1 lakh. Full maths, fees and FAQs.
The Tata Card is issued under the Tata Card brand rather than through SBI Card's main catalogue. It costs up to ₹499, waived at ₹1 lakh of annual spend, and pays in Empower Points worth ₹1 each — so its percentages are true percentages, not points at 25 paise.
Its quiet strength is the 1% uncapped base rate. That beats the base rate on SBI's own PRIME (0.5%) and ELITE (0.5%), on a card costing a tenth as much.

Eligibility Criteria
Tata Card publishes no age or income threshold. Approval rests on the issuer's own assessment. Indian residency and a valid PAN are required. Add-on cards are free.
Note two things about this card's documentation. It is issued at tatacard.com rather than through SBI Card's main catalogue, and its published pages are noticeably thinner than SBI's own — the fuel waiver band and cap, and the reward expiry, are simply not stated.
Also: the joining fee is published as "Up to Rs. 499 + GST", so it may be lower for some applicants. ₹499 is the ceiling.
"Up to 5% at Tata Outlets" Is a Ceiling, Not a Rate
The most important thing to get right. Tata's own wording is "up to 5% value back on Tata outlets" — and it does not publish the per-outlet schedule.
So the 5% may apply at some Tata brands and not others, at rates that are unstated. Any comparison tool applying a flat 5% will overstate this card.
What is published:
- Croma and croma.com: 1.5% — stated outright
- Grocery and departmental stores: 3%
- Everything else: 1%
Treat the 3% band as the card's reliable accelerated rate and the "up to 5%" as upside to verify at the till.
Reward Structure
| Spend | Rate | Cap |
|---|---|---|
| **Tata outlets** | **Up to 5%** (ceiling) | **None** |
| **Grocery and departmental stores** | **3%** | **None** |
| **Croma and croma.com** | **1.5%** | **None** |
| Everything else | **1%** | **None** |
| Fuel, cash advances | **0%** | — |
No caps on any rate, which is rare at this price — SimplySAVE, at the same ₹499, caps its band at 5,000 points a month.
Empower Points are worth ₹1 each — published, not inferred. Tata states "1 Empower Point = Re. 1" outright, making them worth four times an ordinary SBI Reward Point.
The 1% base rate is the headline nobody writes about
Set it against SBI's own range:
| Card | Fee | Base rate |
|---|---|---|
| **Tata Card** | **₹499** | **1%** |
| SimplySAVE SBI Card | ₹499 | 0.17% |
| SimplyCLICK SBI Card | ₹499 | 0.25% |
| SBI Card PRIME | ₹2,999 | 0.5% |
| SBI Card ELITE | ₹4,999 | 0.5% |
A 1% uncapped base rate at ₹499 beats every one of them, including cards costing ten times as much. For anything outside a narrow accelerated category, this card simply earns more.
One modelling note: the 3X category codes are inferred. Tata names "departmental and grocery stores" without publishing merchant category codes, so the grouping follows SBI's published codes for the same category names.
Welcome Benefit and Fee Waiver
Welcome: 500 Empower Points — ₹500 — on spending ₹2,000 within 60 days of card activation, credited within 60 days of receiving the card.
₹500 against a ₹499 fee covers year one exactly, and the ₹2,000 hurdle is trivial.
Fee waiver: the annual fee is waived at ₹1,00,000 of annual spend — about ₹8,400 a month. Easily cleared by anyone using the card as a primary, and unlike the Tata Neu cards, this one does have a spend-based waiver.
There is no other milestone programme. The waiver is the only anniversary-year benefit.
No Lounge Access
Worth stating plainly: neither Tata Card has a lounge programme or insurance. At ₹499 that is unremarkable — SimplySAVE and SimplyCLICK have none either.
Worked Example
Illustrative, at ₹20,000 a month — ₹2.4 lakh a year, comfortably clearing the fee waiver:
| Category | Monthly spend | Rate | Value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grocery and departmental stores | ₹7,000 | 3% | ₹210 |
| Westside, Tanishq, Tata CLiQ | ₹2,000 | up to 5% | ₹100 (at ceiling) |
| Croma | ₹1,000 | 1.5% | ₹15 |
| Everything else | ₹8,500 | 1% | ₹85 |
| Fuel | ₹1,500 | 0% | ₹0 |
| **Monthly total** | **₹20,000** | **₹410 — 2.05%** |
Annual tally:
| Empower Points earned | ₹4,920 |
|---|---|
| Welcome points (year one) | ₹500 |
| **Year-one total** | **₹5,420** |
| **Steady state** | **₹4,920** |
| Annual fee | **₹0** (waived at ₹1 lakh) |
| **Effective return** | **2.05% of spend** |
A 2% effective return on a free card is excellent for the entry tier — and unlike most entry cards, it does not depend on your spending falling into narrow categories, because the base rate itself is 1%.
Caveat: the Tata-outlet line assumes the full 5%. If the actual schedule pays less at your outlets, that ₹1,200 a year falls.
Where You Won't Earn
| Excluded | Note |
|---|---|
| **Fuel** | MCC 5172, 5541, 5542, 5983 |
| **Cash advances** | 2.5% fee, minimum ₹500, interest from day one |
The fuel surcharge waiver is the whole fuel benefit — but Tata Card publishes the benefit without stating the transaction band or the cap, which is unusual. Assume the standard ₹500–₹3,000 band and ₹100 cycle cap unless the terms say otherwise.
The range-wide transaction fees apply: ₹199 per rent payment, 1% on wallet loads above ₹1,000, 1% on utility payments once the cycle total passes ₹50,000, and 1% on education payments through third-party apps.
Fees and Charges
| Charge | Amount |
|---|---|
| Joining fee | **Up to ₹499** + GST |
| Renewal fee | Up to ₹499 + GST, waived at ₹1,00,000 annual spend |
| Add-on card fee | Nil |
| Finance charge | 3.75% per month — **45% per annum** |
| Interest-free period | 20 to 50 days; none if any part of last month's bill is unpaid |
| Forex markup | 3.5% |
| Cash advance fee | 2.5%, minimum ₹500 |
| Fuel surcharge waiver | 1%, band and cap **not published** |
| Late payment | ₹100 to ₹1,300 by balance |
| Overlimit | 2.5%, minimum ₹600 |
| GST | 18% on all of the above |
No reward expiry is published on Tata Card's pages. Empower Points are stated elsewhere to expire two years from accrual — confirm before letting a balance build.
Tata Card vs Tata Card SELECT
| **Tata Card** | Tata Card SELECT | |
|---|---|---|
| Annual fee | Up to ₹499 | ₹2,999 |
| Fee waiver | ₹1,00,000 | ₹2,00,000 |
| Tata outlets | Up to 5% | Up to 5% — **same** |
| Croma | 1.5% | 2% |
| 3X band | Grocery, departmental | **+ dining, international** |
| Base rate | **1%** | **1%** — same |
| Welcome | 500 points (₹500) | ₹3,000 voucher |
| Milestones | Fee waiver only | **₹9,000 across three rungs** |
| Lounge | None | None |
The base rate and the Tata-outlet ceiling are identical. The SELECT's step up buys a wider 3X band, a slightly better Croma rate, a bigger welcome voucher and the ₹9,000 milestone ladder.
Break-even on the ₹2,500 fee difference is essentially the milestone ladder: clear ₹2 lakh a year and the SELECT's first rung plus fee reversal already repays it. Below ₹2 lakh, this card does the same job on rates for a fraction of the cost.
Tata Card vs SimplySAVE SBI Card
Both ₹499. The comparison is stark.
| **Tata Card** | SimplySAVE SBI Card | |
|---|---|---|
| Fee waiver | ₹1,00,000 | ₹1,00,000 |
| Accelerated rate | **3%** grocery and departmental | 1.67% on 4 categories |
| Accelerated cap | **None** | 5,000 points a month |
| Base rate | **1%** | **0.17%** |
| Point value | **₹1** | ₹0.25 |
| Accrual denominator | ₹100 | ₹150 |
| Redemption fee | Not published | ₹99 |
The Tata Card wins on every line except category breadth — SimplySAVE adds dining and movies to the accelerated band. But at 3% against 1.67%, uncapped against capped, and 1% base against 0.17%, the Tata Card is the stronger ₹499 card for most people.
Is the Tata Card Worth It?
Yes, as a cheap primary card. A 1% uncapped base rate in points worth a full rupee, with the fee waived at ₹1 lakh, beats every SBI card in the range on general spending — including ones costing ₹4,999.
Yes, if you buy groceries. 3% uncapped on grocery and departmental stores at a ₹499 fee is very strong.
Yes, if you shop at Tata brands — though verify the "up to 5%" applies where you actually shop.
Consider the SELECT if your annual spend exceeds ₹2 lakh, where its ₹9,000 milestone ladder repays the higher fee comfortably.
No, if you want lounge access, insurance or travel benefits. This card has none of them.
Note the thin documentation. The fuel waiver band and cap, the reward expiry and the per-outlet Tata rate schedule are all unpublished. Ask before relying on any of them.
Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Empower Point worth? ₹1 — Tata states it outright. That makes Empower Points worth four times an ordinary SBI Reward Point.

Is there a milestone programme? No. The fee waiver at ₹1 lakh is the only anniversary-year benefit. The SELECT variant adds a ₹9,000 voucher ladder.
Does the card offer lounge access? No. Neither Tata Card has a lounge programme or insurance.
How does it compare with SimplySAVE at the same fee? The Tata Card pays 3% uncapped on grocery and departmental stores against SimplySAVE's 1.67% capped at 5,000 points a month, and a 1% base rate against 0.17% — in points worth ₹1 rather than ₹0.25. SimplySAVE's only edge is adding dining and movies to its accelerated band.
