The IDBI Bank Royale Signature Credit Card is one of a shrinking number of genuinely lifetime free cards in India — nil joining fee, nil annual fee, nil renewal fee, on both the primary card and up to two add-on cards. In exchange you get a flat, unspectacular 0.75% return on eligible spends, four domestic lounge visits a year, and a ₹25 lakh air accident cover. It is aimed at people starting their credit journey or anyone who wants a permanent no-cost card in the wallet, not at reward maximisers.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Age: primary cardholder 21 to 60 years; the upper limit extends to 65 years for self-employed applicants.
  • Add-on cardholder: 18 years and above, and an immediate family member with a PAN card. Up to 2 add-on cards are permitted.
  • Residency: must be a resident of India.
  • Income: IDBI Bank does not publish a minimum income for this card. Approval is at the bank's discretion based on your profile and credit history. The ₹25,000-per-month figure that circulates on aggregator sites is not an IDBI-published number.
  • Documents: ID proof (Voter ID / Passport / Driving Licence / PAN / Aadhaar), residence proof (electricity or telephone bill / election card / passport / Aadhaar), income proof (latest 3 months' salary slips, latest 3 months' bank statement, ITR or Form 16) and a recent photograph.

Welcome Benefit

Two separate bonuses stack at the start of the relationship:

TriggerDelight PointsValue at ₹0.25/point
Card activation500₹125
First transaction of ₹1,500 or more, within 30 days of card issuance750₹187.50
**Total (best case)****1,250****₹312.50**

If you miss the 30-day window, the first-transaction bonus drops to 400 points (₹100) provided you make an eligible transaction of ₹1,500 or more between day 31 and day 90. After 90 days the bonus lapses entirely. The welcome bonus is not awarded if the qualifying transaction falls into a category excluded from Delight Points accrual — so do not use fuel, insurance premiums or a tax payment as your first spend.

Reward Structure: How You Earn

The Royale Signature earns 3 Delight Points for every ₹100 spent, flat, across every eligible merchant category. There is no accelerated category on this card — travel, dining, shopping, groceries and online spends all earn the same rate.

IDBI publishes the value of a Delight Point as ₹0.25. That makes the effective return:

  • 3 points × ₹0.25 = ₹0.75 per ₹100, i.e. 0.75%

There is no monthly, quarterly or annual cap on accrual. Points are credited only after a transaction settles; if a transaction is authorised but never settled, no points are credited, and if a transaction is later reversed or refunded the corresponding points are debited back (your balance can go negative).

The birthday-month accelerator

The one genuine kicker on this card is the 2X Delight Points multiplier during your birthday month — 6 points per ₹100, a 1.5% return, across all eligible spends. Unlike the Euphoria World variant, the Royale's birthday bonus carries no travel-spend carve-out in IDBI's Delight accrual table. If you have a large planned purchase, timing it to your birthday month doubles the return.

Worked example (illustrative)

The uploaded IDBI documents contain worked examples for interest and minimum-amount-due calculations but none for rewards, so the following is an illustration built from the published rates, not a bank-supplied example.

Assume ₹40,000 of monthly spend, of which ₹5,000 is fuel and ₹2,000 is an insurance premium — both excluded.

ItemAmountPointsValue
Eligible spend (₹40,000 − ₹7,000)₹33,000990₹247.50
Fuel₹5,0000₹0
Insurance premium₹2,0000₹0
**Monthly total****₹40,000****990****₹247.50**

Over a year that is ₹3,96,000 of eligible spend and 11,880 points (₹2,970). Add the ₹2 lakh milestone (1,500 points, ₹375) and, because eligible annual spend is just under ₹4 lakh, the second milestone is narrowly missed. Effective return on total spend of ₹4.8 lakh: roughly 0.70%, rising to about 0.78% if the ₹4 lakh milestone is cleared. Add one birthday month at 2X and you gain another ₹247.50.

Milestone Benefits

Net annual spend in a card yearBonus Delight PointsValue
₹2,00,0001,500₹375
₹4,00,0002,000₹500

Both milestones are cumulative — cross ₹4 lakh and you collect 3,500 points (₹875) in total for the year.

Categories that do not count towards milestone spends: only transactions eligible for Delight Points count. That means fuel, insurance premiums, government and tax payments, cash withdrawals, securities and brokerage transactions, court costs and fines, and IRCTC or passenger railway bookings are all excluded from the milestone tally as well as from ordinary accrual. If a large slice of your spend sits in those buckets, the milestone is harder to reach than the headline number suggests.

Other Benefits

Airport lounge access. One complimentary visit per calendar quarter at participating domestic lounges in India, delivered through the Visa Signature domestic lounge programme, regardless of airline or class of travel. No minimum spend or other precondition is attached. The benefit is available to the primary cardholder only — add-on cardholders do not get lounge access — and IDBI notes it is provided by Visa and subject to change at Visa's discretion. There is no international lounge benefit.

Fuel surcharge waiver. 1% fuel surcharge waived at all fuel stations on transactions between ₹400 and ₹5,000, capped at ₹500 of waiver per month. Note that the older Royale Card Usage Guide booklet quotes 2.5%; the current product page and MITC both state 1%, which is the figure to rely on.

Air travel accident insurance. A complimentary ₹25 lakh personal air travel accident cover. The Usage Guide specifies that for a claim to be processed there must be a minimum of two purchase transactions on the card within 90 days of the event date, so an unused card will not support a claim. Cover is provided by a third-party insurer, which is also responsible for settlement; IDBI does not name the underwriter in any published document.

Zero lost card liability. Once you report the loss to IDBI's 24-hour customer care, the card is blocked immediately and any fraudulent transaction after that report is covered by the Bank. Transactions before you report are not protected by this cover.

EMI facility. Purchases of ₹3,000 and above can be converted to EMI at 13% per annum, with nil conversion and nil foreclosure fees. The MITC lists tenures of 3, 6, 9, 12, 18, 24, 30 and 36 months; the product page lists only 3, 6, 9 and 12.

Interest-free credit. Up to 48 days, provided the previous statement's Total Amount Due was cleared in full. The actual window ranges from 18 to 48 days depending on where in the billing cycle your purchase falls.

Visa Signature privileges. Access to Visa's Signature offer programme on airport shopping, hotels and car rentals, plus Visa's travel concierge service. These are Visa-run and change at Visa's discretion.

Family cards. Up to 2 add-on cards, free, for family members above 18. Points earned on add-ons pool with the primary account for redemption.

Redemption

Delight Points are redeemed on the IDBI Delight portal (idbidelight.com) at ₹0.25 per point, against:

  • Cashback / statement credit adjusted against your card outstanding
  • Merchandise across apparel, electronics, jewellery, home decor and kitchen appliances
  • Gift cards and vouchers
  • Flight, hotel and bus bookings
  • Movie tickets and mobile recharges

There is no redemption fee on any IDBI card variant. Third-party sites report a minimum redemption threshold of 1,000 points, though IDBI does not state this in its own published documents.

Expiry: points earned from 11 April 2023 onwards are valid for 36 months from the transaction date. Points credited under a campaign or promotional offer, and additional points earned at Partner Stores, expire after just 12 months — worth watching if a bonus lands in your account.

Category Restrictions: Where You Won't Earn Delight Points

IDBI operates a closed, MCC-based exclusion list. No Delight Points accrue on:

Excluded categoryMCCs
Cash disbursements (manual and automated)6010, 6011
Securities brokers and dealers6211
Insurance sales, underwriting and premiums6300, 6381
Direct marketing — insurance services5960
Court costs including alimony and child support9211
Fines9222
Tax payments9311
Government services (not elsewhere classified)9399
Intra-government purchases9405
Passenger railways (IRCTC and rail bookings)4112
Fuel — service stations, automated dispensers, petroleum products, fuel dealers5541, 5542, 5172, 5983

Two points worth flagging. First, fuel earns nothing on this card — the 1% surcharge waiver is a separate benefit and does not compensate for the missing reward. Second, the passenger-railway exclusion applies to Royale; IDBI awards rail points only on its Euphoria variant.

One inconsistency in IDBI's own documentation: the older Royale Card Usage Guide also lists education and mutual funds among excluded categories, but no education MCC appears in the current MITC exclusion table or the Delight programme FAQ. The Usage Guide predates the April 2023 Delight programme, so education spends should earn — but treat this as the least certain line item on the card and verify against your own statement.

Finally, because this is a Visa card, it cannot be linked to UPI. Credit-card-on-UPI in India is a RuPay-only facility, so UPI spends are simply not available on the Royale Signature.

Is the IDBI Royale Signature Credit Card Worth It?

On a lifetime free card, the only question that matters is whether the benefits justify carrying it — not whether they justify a fee, because there isn't one. On that test the Royale Signature clears comfortably. Four domestic lounge visits a year are worth roughly ₹1,200 to ₹2,000 if you actually use them, the ₹25 lakh air accident cover costs nothing, and the ₹312.50 welcome bonus more or less pays for the paperwork. For a first-time cardholder building a credit history, or for anyone who wants a permanent zero-cost card that still opens a lounge door on a domestic layover, it does the job.

What it is not is a card to put your primary spend on. A 0.75% flat return is well below what free or near-free competitors deliver on their strong categories, there is no accelerated category anywhere, and the exclusion list is unusually broad — fuel, insurance, tax and rail spends all earn zero. The 3.5% forex mark-up rules it out for international use, and the 2.50% monthly interest rate is only attractive relative to other IDBI variants, not to the market. IDBI's smaller branch and service footprint is a real consideration too.

The sensible use is as a secondary card: keep it for the lounge visits, the milestone bonuses if your spend naturally clears ₹2 lakh, and a concentrated burst of spending in your birthday month at 2X — and route everything else to a card with a better rate.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is the IDBI Royale Signature Credit Card lifetime free? Yes. The joining fee, annual fee and renewal fee are all nil, on both the primary card and add-on cards. There is no spend condition attached to the fee waiver because there is no fee to waive.

How many Delight Points do I earn per ₹100? 3 Delight Points per ₹100 on all eligible spends, doubling to 6 points per ₹100 during your birthday month.

What is one Delight Point worth? ₹0.25, as published by IDBI on its Delight programme FAQ. At 3 points per ₹100 that works out to an effective return of 0.75%.

How much lounge access do I get? One complimentary visit per calendar quarter at participating domestic airport lounges in India — four visits a year — under the Visa Signature domestic lounge programme. There is no international lounge benefit, and add-on cardholders are not covered.

Do I earn points on fuel? No. Fuel MCCs are on IDBI's exclusion list. You do get a 1% fuel surcharge waiver on transactions between ₹400 and ₹5,000, capped at ₹500 per month, but no Delight Points.

Which other spends earn nothing? Insurance premiums, government and tax payments, court costs and fines, securities and brokerage transactions, cash withdrawals, and IRCTC or passenger railway bookings.

Can I use this card on UPI? No. Credit-card-on-UPI in India works only with RuPay credit cards, and the Royale Signature is issued on the Visa network.

When do my Delight Points expire? Points earned from 11 April 2023 onwards are valid for 36 months from the transaction date. Points from campaigns, promotional offers or Partner Stores expire after only 12 months.

What are the milestone benefits? 1,500 bonus Delight Points on net annual spends of ₹2 lakh and a further 2,000 points on ₹4 lakh — 3,500 points, or ₹875, in total if you clear both. Only spends eligible for Delight Points count towards the milestone.

What is the forex mark-up? 3.5% over the Visa conversion rate on all international transactions. That is high, so use a different card abroad.

Is there a minimum income requirement? IDBI does not publish one. The stated eligibility is age-based (21–60 years, 65 for self-employed) plus Indian residency, with approval at the bank's discretion.

How do I redeem Delight Points? Through the IDBI Delight portal, for cashback against your card outstanding, merchandise, gift cards, flight, hotel and bus bookings, movie tickets or mobile recharges. There is no redemption fee.

Can I get add-on cards? Yes, up to 2 add-on cards for immediate family members above 18 who hold a PAN card, at no charge. Points from add-on cards pool with the primary account, but lounge access remains primary-cardholder only.

Is the air accident cover automatic? The ₹25 lakh cover is complimentary, but the Usage Guide requires a minimum of two purchase transactions on the card within 90 days of the event date for a claim to be processed. A dormant card will not support a claim.
