Doctor's SBI Card Review 2026: ₹20 Lakh Indemnity Cover, 5X Rewards, Lounge Access, Fees & FAQs
Doctor's SBI Card costs ₹1,499 and includes ₹20 lakh of professional indemnity insurance, 5X Reward Points on medical supplies and travel, and 8 lounge visits a year. Full benefits, reward maths, fees and FAQs.
Most credit cards should be judged on their reward rate. This one should not. The Doctor's SBI Card costs ₹1,499 a year and includes ₹20 lakh of professional indemnity insurance — cover that reimburses legal and defence costs, out-of-court settlements and court awards, with a 0% deductible. Bought separately, that policy costs a multiple of the card's fee. The 0.25% base earn rate is almost beside the point.

Eligibility Criteria
The card is offered to medical practitioners. SBI Card publishes no age or income threshold and no list of qualifying registrations on its product pages; approval is at the bank's discretion. Indian residency and a valid PAN are required. Add-on cards are free.
A second variant, the Doctor's SBI Card (in association with the Indian Medical Association), is identical in every published benefit, rate, fee and cap — the association governs eligibility rather than economics.
The ₹20 Lakh Professional Indemnity Cover
This is the card. SBI's terms describe cover that reimburses:
- Legal and defence costs arising from a claim of professional negligence
- Out-of-court settlement expenses
- Court awards made against the practitioner
with a 0% deductible on the sum insured — meaning the policy pays from the first rupee rather than after an excess.
Put the numbers next to each other. A standalone professional indemnity policy for an Indian medical practitioner at a ₹20 lakh sum insured typically runs into several thousand rupees a year. The card's fee is ₹1,499, and that fee is itself reversed at ₹2 lakh of annual spend — a threshold most practising doctors will clear on routine practice expenses alone. For a doctor who would buy indemnity cover anyway, the card can be net-positive before a single Reward Point is earned.
Two caveats worth stating plainly. First, SBI does not publish the full policy wording on its product pages, so the exclusions, claim process and insurer are worth confirming before relying on this as your only cover. Second, a bundled card benefit is not a substitute for a professionally advised policy sized to your specialty and claim exposure — treat it as a valuable floor, not a ceiling.
Reward Structure
Reward Points on this card are worth ₹0.25 each — 4 points redeem against ₹1 of your outstanding bill. Every percentage below is stated after that conversion.
| Spend | Points | Effective rate |
|---|---|---|
| Medical supplies | 5 RP per ₹100 | **1.25%** |
| Travel bookings | 5 RP per ₹100 | **1.25%** |
| International spends | 5 RP per ₹100 | **1.25%** |
| **All spends on 1 July (Doctor's Day)** | 5 RP per ₹100 | **1.25%** |
| Everything else | 1 RP per ₹100 | **0.25%** |
| Fuel | Nil | **0%** |
Both 5X bands are capped at 7,500 Reward Points a month — and they are two separate caps, not one shared pool. SBI's T&C: the medical-and-travel band and the international band "each will have a maximum cap of 7,500 Reward Points per month". At 5 points per ₹100 each binds at ₹1,50,000 of such spend a month, after which 1 Reward Point per ₹100 continues. The Doctor's Day rate has no published cap.
Three things about this structure deserve attention.
The Doctor's Day rate is a date, not a category. Every spend made on 1 July earns 5X, whatever the merchant. If you have a large planned purchase, timing it to 1 July quintuples the return on it.
International spends earn 5X — but the forex markup is 3.5%. Earning 1.25% against a 3.5% markup still leaves you 2.25% down on a foreign-currency transaction. The 5X softens the blow; it does not make the card good for spending abroad.
Category is decided by MCC. "Medical supplies" and "travel bookings" resolve to the merchant category codes the card network assigns — pharmacies, medical and dental equipment suppliers, hospitals, labs and clinics on one side; airlines, hotels, travel agencies and car rental on the other. SBI names the categories without publishing the codes, so a merchant that bills under an unexpected MCC may not earn the accelerated rate.
Welcome and Milestone Benefits
Welcome: a ₹1,500 e-gift voucher from Yatra.com. That is the fee back in year one.
Milestone: a ₹5,000 e-gift voucher at ₹5,00,000 of annual spend, redeemable at Yatra.com, Bata or Shoppers Stop.
Note the gap between the two thresholds on this card. The fee is reversed at ₹2 lakh, but the ₹5,000 voucher needs ₹5 lakh — two and a half times as much. A cardholder optimising only for the fee waiver stops at ₹2 lakh and leaves ₹5,000 on the table. If your annual card spend lands anywhere between ₹4 lakh and ₹5 lakh, pushing to the higher threshold is worth ₹5,000 for the marginal spend.
Lounge Access
Unusually balanced for a card at this fee:
- 4 complimentary domestic airport lounge accesses per year, maximum 1 per quarter, on the Visa programme
- 4 complimentary international airport lounge accesses per year, maximum 2 per quarter, through Priority Pass, with access to 1,000+ lounges worldwide
Beyond the complimentary visits, a Priority Pass lounge costs US$27 plus taxes per visit.
Most SBI cards at the ₹1,499 mark give domestic access only, if any. Four genuinely complimentary international visits is a meaningful benefit for a doctor attending overseas conferences.
Worked Example
Illustrative, at ₹40,000 a month:
| Category | Monthly spend | Points | Value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Medical supplies and pharmacy | ₹12,000 | 600 | ₹150 |
| Travel bookings | ₹6,000 | 300 | ₹75 |
| Everything else | ₹22,000 | 220 | ₹55 |
| **Monthly total** | **₹40,000** | **1,120** | **₹280 — 0.7%** |
Annualised: ₹3,360 in Reward Points on ₹4.8 lakh of spend, plus the ₹1,500 welcome voucher in year one and the ₹5,000 milestone voucher — and the ₹1,499 fee reversed at ₹2 lakh.
But the honest framing is the one at the top of this article: at ₹4.8 lakh of annual spend the rewards return ₹3,360, while the indemnity cover is worth several times that to anyone who would otherwise buy it.
Where You Won't Earn
| Excluded | Note |

| **Fuel** | MCC 5172, 5541, 5542, 5983 — excluded across SBI's range |
| **Cash advances** | 2.5% fee, minimum ₹500, interest from day one |
The fuel surcharge waiver is the entire fuel benefit: 1% reversed on transactions between ₹500 and ₹4,000, capped at ₹250 per statement cycle. Fuel earns no points.
SBI's range-wide transaction fees apply: ₹199 per rent payment, 1% on wallet loads above ₹1,000, 1% on utility payments once the cycle total passes ₹50,000, and 1% on education payments made through third-party apps.

Is the Doctor's SBI Card Worth It?
Yes, if you are a practising doctor who would buy professional indemnity cover anyway. ₹20 lakh of cover with a 0% deductible, for a fee that is reversed at ₹2 lakh of spend, is the strongest value proposition on this card by a distance. The lounge access and vouchers are a bonus.
Yes, if you travel. Four domestic and four international lounge visits a year, plus 5X on travel bookings, is a reasonable travel package at ₹1,499.
No, if you are judging it on earn rate. A 0.25% base rate is weak, and 1.25% on the accelerated categories is ordinary. If you want a rewards card, SBI's own SimplySAVE returns 1.67% on four everyday categories at ₹499, and the CASHBACK SBI Card returns 5% online. Neither carries indemnity cover.
Not applicable if you are not a medical practitioner — the card is not offered outside the profession.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the annual fee of the Doctor's SBI Card? ₹1,499 plus GST, on joining and renewal. The renewal fee is reversed on ₹2,00,000 of annual spend in the previous year.
How much professional indemnity cover does the card include? ₹20 lakh, with a 0% deductible. It reimburses legal and defence costs, out-of-court settlement expenses and court awards. SBI does not publish the full policy wording on its product pages, so confirm exclusions and the claim process before relying on it as sole cover.
What is the difference between the Doctor's SBI Card and the IMA variant? None in published economics. The Doctor's SBI Card (in association with the Indian Medical Association) carries identical rates, caps, fees, insurance and benefits; the association governs eligibility rather than what the card pays.
What earns 5X Reward Points? Medical supplies, travel bookings and international spends — plus every spend made on 1 July, Doctor's Day, whatever the merchant. At 4 points to the rupee, 5X works out to 1.25%.
Are there caps on the reward rates? Yes. The 5X band on medical supplies and travel bookings is capped at 7,500 Reward Points a month, and the 5X band on international spends has its own separate 7,500-point monthly cap. Each binds at ₹1,50,000 of such spend, after which 1 Reward Point per ₹100 accrues. SBI's product page does not mention either; the figures come from the card's T&C booklet.
How many lounge visits do I get? Four domestic a year, maximum one per quarter, and four international a year, maximum two per quarter, through Priority Pass. Beyond the complimentary visits, a Priority Pass lounge costs US$27 plus taxes.
Is it worth pushing spend to ₹5 lakh a year? If you are already close, yes. The ₹5,000 milestone voucher sits at ₹5 lakh while the fee reversal sits at ₹2 lakh, so the marginal spend between those two points is what earns the voucher.
